English as a Second Language (ESL) Program
The English as a Second Language (ESL) program at George School is designed to help international students who need support before they gain the level of English fluency they need to participate fully in regular academic classes.
Living in the United States is a great way to study English. You'll hear it every day. You'll speak it every day. And living at George School is even better. Because we limit the number of students from any one language group, we are truly internationally diverse. You'll make friends here from around the world. You'll start to understand the culture. Our campus will become your second home.
But that's just the beginning. At George School, you'll read great literature. (Yes, you will understand Shakespeare!) You'll study history. You'll learn to discuss the economy.
Your writing will get better as you compose essays, complete research papers, and take tests. If you want, you can prepare to take the TOEFL exam.
In the ESL classrooms, students focus on communicating in English through writing, speaking, listening, and reading. Tutors are available to help students if needed.
The ESL program also serves as an introduction to the traditions and culture of the United States.
Some international students arrive at George School speaking and writing well enough that they do not need ESL courses. Others need the additional support before they are comfortable taking all of their classes with American students.
