AP Physics C-Mechanics Summer Assignment 2011-12
Please read this document now and check that you can access the online materials. If you are unable to access the tutorials mentioned below, contact me before leaving for the summer.
Friends,
This summer I want you to show me that you are familiar with some basic topics of science and mathematics. I ask that you look over some materials that I developed while I was teaching at Clemson University, which goes to show that I am teaching you physics at the college level. While the pace of the course will be slower than you will experience in college, the depth of learning will be the same. This is the summer work in order of importance:
| 1. |

Either purchase the textbook from the bookstore or online vendor (Physics for Scientists and Engineers, 6th Edition by Serway and Jewett. ISBN: 0-534-40842-7) or download Chapter 1 of the textbook here: https://fc.georgeschool.org/Login/FAV2-0000D375/FOV2-0000DA6C/FOV2-0000D3B8/FOV2-000180A4/FOV2-00020ADC/. |

|
Read Chapter 1 in the text.
| a. |
Memorize the Power of Ten prefixes in Table 1.4 on page 7 from nano to giga. Be able to associate their name, their abbreviation, and their power. (For example, μ ≡ mu ≡ 10-6) |
| b. |
Answer Problems 3, 9, 14, 17, 19, 20, 22, 29, 30, 31, 36, 44, 47, 49, 50, 61, 63, and 67 at the end of Chapter 1 (pages 18-21). (Answer the Problems, not the Questions. You will turn in your work to be graded during the first week of school, so work as neatly and correctly as you know how. Note the answers to the odd problems are given, and you will have some time to consult with me. Don’t wait until the last minute to get these done! | |

Carefully study the first nine (9) lessons of my Microsoft Excel tutorial, which can be found online at http://www.basicxandrobotics.com/excel/. (If you do a Google search for “physics excel”, my old tutorials will show up as the #1 link, but these tutorials do not show how to graph with Excel 2007.) You will have an open notes (computer) test on the first nine Excel tutorials during the first week of school. (If you wish, you may study all 12 of the tutorials as they will be important to know in the Fall Term.) |

Next, please read and understand the following “On-line Tutorials”. - graphing by hand (http://phoenix.phys.clemson.edu/tutorials/graph/index.html) - calculating error (http://phoenix.phys.clemson.edu/tutorials/error/) - instrument uncertainty (http://phoenix.phys.clemson.edu/tutorials/uncertain/index.html) - accuracy and precision (http://phoenix.phys.clemson.edu/tutorials/ap/index.html) |
Good luck with your summer preparations and I hope you have a great summer. I am really looking forward to working with you next year.
