George School vs Lower Moreland High School - Fri 09/09/2011 @ 3:45 PM
T 1-1
Lower Moreland opened the scoring midway through the first half with a nice shot into the corner of the net from just inside the penalty spot. Moritz Weidner tied the game for George School with fifteen minutes remaining in the contest. Moritz, a George School junior and a native of Frankfurt, Germany, outworked the Lower Moreland defenders with hustle and determination to put himself in position to shoot from a very sharp angle. Moritz then calmly placed the ball just inside the far post. Both teams had chances to score near the end of the game, but the goalkeepers held firm and the game ended in a 1-1 tie.

George School vs Moorestown Friends School - Tue 09/27/2011 @ 4:00 PM
Win 1-0
In a very close game that could have gone either way, the Cougars pulled out another victory. Sophomore Justin Koh scored for George School ten minutes into the contest. Justin was sent in alone with the MFS goalkeeper by a perfectly weighted pass from junior Owen Moon and he made no mistake in slotting home the goal. From then on, the game was marked by missed opportunities and excellent defending and goalkeeping. GS goalkeeper junior Aidan Grosso continued his strong play in net by making several key saves during the match. In the second half, Moorestown's offensive pressure caused four wild scrambles inside the GS 18 yard box. Only stout defending and a truly game saving play by GS sweeper, Won Suk You preserved the victory. With under five minutes to play in the game, the ball found its way to a MFS forward 16 yards from goal, the MFS player blasted a shot that was ticketed for the back of the net when Won jumped up and sideways to head the ball out for a corner. It was just an awesome display of athleticism and desire to win from Won that made the difference in this game. That was MFS's last real opportunity to score and the game ended as a 1-0 GS win.

George School vs Valley Forge Military Academy - Wed 09/28/2011 @ 4:00 PM
Win 9-0
The George School junior varsity team continued to play solid soccer vs. Valley Forge Military Academy. Junior Owen Moon opened the scoring at the 15 minute mark by intercepting a clearance attempt from the VFMA goalkeeper and then lofting a 35 yard shot into the empty VFMA goal. Brennan Kinnel and B'alam Morales both scored goals for the Cougars before halftime, so the score at the break was George School 3, VFMA 0.
In the second half, the GS scoring continued. Kelvin Liang, Moritz Weidner (2), Justin Koh, Max Balka, and Mike Carbonara all scored for the Cougars during the second half. To their credit, VFMA continued to push forward throughout the second half in an attempt to break up the GS shutout. Unfortunately, this lead to open GS players in the VFMA defensive zone and ultimately the lopsided score.

The boys' junior varsity soccer team had a very lackluster performance against a good Pennington side. The result was a 0-3 loss. I am confident that the team will regroup and play better next week against two quality sides, Shipley School and Hill School.

George School vs Germantown Friends School - Mon 10/24/2011 @ 4:00 PM
Win 3-1
George School's Kostas Pangiotakis scored in the early going after Cyrus Vakili lofted a beautiful cross from the corner of the Germantown defensive zone. Kostas nodded the ball into the net for a GS 1-0 lead. Germantown struck back with a goal in the opening minutes of the second half to tie the score at 1-1. A few minutes later, Kostas scored again for the Cougars. This time Kostas found himself with the ball to the left of the GFS goal about ten yards from the net, he quickly turned and cracked a shot past the GFS goalkeeper to give GS a 2-1 advantage. The final goal of the game was also the goal of the match. With fifteen minutes to play, George School won a corner kick. Max Balka took the corner and then moved into position in case the ball was knocked back in his direction. After a GS shot was blocked, the ball did make it's way to back to Max. Max then launched a first time shot with such force that the GFS goalkeeper could do nothing more than watch as the missile flew by and bulged the net in the upper corner of the GFS goal. From then on, the GS defense held firm and the game ended as a 3-1 victory for George School.
This game marked the end of the team's Friends Schools League schedule for 2011. The team finished with a very good 7-1 record in FSL play.
