Junior Varsity Boys Tennis 2010-2011 Season

    Win  4-1
    The boys started the season with a win over Church Farm School. Jack Wong, Jack Kang and Kurk Castro all won in straight sets playing singles. Will Yarnall and Ethan Carpene won at 1st doubles by a score of 6-4, 6-2. Our lone loss of the day came at 2nd doubles. Spencer Jacoppi and Jesse Palmiotti played well but lost the match in a close third set tie-breaker.

    Jeffrey Huang won at first singles and Jack Wong won at third singles. The match was tied at two all before the George School doubles pair of Alex Ahn and Phil Jung came through with a two set victory to secure the team win. The squad now has an overall 5-2 record for the season.

    The boys' JV team took the ride to Center City, Philadelphia to take on Friends Select School. The boys' played well on the turf courts at Select winning by a score of 5-0. 

    1st Singles - Jeffrey Huang (GS) defeated Kevin Kim (FSS) 6-1, 6-1
    2nd Singles - Jack Wong (GS) defeated David Youn (FSS) 6-2, 6-2
    3rd Singles - Jesse Palmiotti (GS) defeated Davon Wanza (FSS) 6-2, 6-2

    1st Doubles - Will Yarnall & Zach Kimelheim (GS) defeated Lucia Fernandez & Allie Brunner (FSS) 6-2, 6-1
    2nd Doubles - Spencer Jacoppi & Aidan Grosso (GS) defeated Alexea Lewis & Georgiana Constantinesca (FSS) 6-1, 6-0

    Exhibition Doubles - Scott Park & Justin Koh (GS) defeated Ethin Giles & Hannah Snyder (FSS) 6-2, 6-3

    The team finished the tournament in second place thanks to the strong play of Jack Kang (third singles champion) and the pair of Kurt Castro and Alex Ahn (second doubles champions).

    The George School boys knew it was going to be a tough match playing against the team that won the Friends Schools League JV Tournament last Saturday. The George School team quickly fell behind by losing the 1st and 2nd singles matches. At third singles, George School's Jack Kang won his match in two sets. The George School 1st doubles pair of Alex Ahn and Kurt Castro lost their first set 6-1, but then regroup, increased their intensity and focus and began hitting the ball with conviction. Alex and Kurt eventually won the match in three sets by displaying a huge amount of heart and desire. So it all came down to 2nd doubles to decided the winner. The GS pair of Zach Kimelheim and Will Yarnall won the first set, then lost the second set in a tiebreaker. Zach and Will then fell behind in the third set 1-3 in games before charging back to force a third set tiebreaker. It was a very close tiebreaker with many lead changes, but with Zach and Will up 6-5 the Friends' Central player double faulted while serving to secure the match and team victory for George School.

    Singles players, Jack Wong and Kurt Castro, and the doubles team of Zach Kimelheim and Will Yarnall, propelled the squad to a very close victory over Germantown Friends School.  The victory raised the team's overall record for the season to eight wins and two losses.

    The final match of the season turned out to be a very close battle. The format for the team contest was four singles and five doubles matches. At first singles, George School's Jack Wong played a very good match and won in two sets. At second doubles, GS's Kurt Castro played his best singles match of the year and also won in two sets. At third singles, GS's Phil Jung overcame dropping the first of his match by winning the final two sets. At fourth singles, GS's Alex Ahn played flawless and inspired tennis, winning 6-0, 6-0.

    PDS won the matches at first, second, third and fourth doubles. So the outcome of the team match came down to fifth doubles. The GS pair of Jared Kimelheim and Scott Park won in two sets to secure the victory for the team. The junior varsity team finished the season with a overall record of ten wins and two losses.
