George School vs Church Farm School - Fri 03/25/2011 @ 3:45 PM
Win 5-0
After only a couple days of practice, our cougars traveled to face the phoenix in our season opener. Our boys dominated our opponents by not dropping a single set in any of the five matches played. Everyone competed well considering the windy and cold conditions. Senior captains Jason Sisti and Devon Pinkus, who played 1st and 2nd singles respectively, led the squad to victory. This contest gave our players the chance to return to competitive form.

George School vs Hill School - Sat 03/26/2011 @ 12:45 PM
Win 4-3
For the second consecutive day we traveled to the other side of Philadelphia to take on a non-league opponent. Facing a revamped Hill squad headed by an energetic new coach, we were forced to shuffle our four doubles pairings due to some key absences. Our three top singles players (Jason Sisti, Devon Pinkus and Lenny Gottlieb) played with poise and won their matches in straight sets. Hill proved resilient in 4th singles, 2nd doubles, and 3rd doubles. The deciding match fell on the shoulders of our 1st doubles pairing of sophomore Justin Becker and junior Evan McGowan, who managed to win the third set super-tiebraker by a score of 10-7, thus securing our second win. All in all, it was a good test for the team in yet another chilly March day.

George School vs Peddie School - Wed 03/30/2011 @ 4:00 PM
Loss 1-4
We hosted perennial tennis powerhouse Peddie in our home opener. Jason Sisti faced archrival Tim Rosensteel for the second consecutive year. Jason played quite well achieving a set point in both sets. Unfortunately, he lost the first set in a tiebreaker and the other by a score of 7-5. Devon Pinkus continued on his winning ways without dropping a set in his third consecutive match. Our first doubles pairing of juniors Evan McGowan and Anthony Verleysen got off to a slow start, but managed to force their opponents to a tiebraker in the second set. Peddie once again proved to be a tough opponent especially for our inexperienced players. This match gave us a good lesson in what we need to improve on in order to be more competitive.

George School vs Shipley School (FSL Team Semi-Finals) - Tue 05/17/2011 @ 3:30 PM
Win 3-2
The varsity tennis team traveled to Springfield to take on the second seeded Shipley squad indoors. Shipley took an early lead by winning both doubles flights in straight sets. Lenny Gottlieb got us on the board by winning his third singles match 6-1, 6-2. Then Jason Sisti avenged an earlier loss to their top player at 1S. After two tight sets that went to tiebreakers, Jason won in straight sets to tie the match score 2-2. It was now left up to Devon Pinkus to complete the singles sweep. He split sets with their senior captain and all-league player. Devon kicked it into high gear on the decisive set winning it by a score of 6-0. Final score: GS - 3 Shipley - 2. George School will play Friends' Central School for the championship on Thursday.

Friends Schools League Individual Preliminaries
Sat 05/21/2011 @ 10:00 AM
Four out of our five pairings (flights) won their morning quarter final matches thus advancing to the semis held in the early afternoon. After some slow starts, our three singles players persevered and won their afternoon semifinal matches. First to finish was Devon Pinkus at second singles, going against his Shipley opponent, who had taken him to three sets in their two previous meetings. This time Devon went to work and economically pulled out the match in straight sets. Next to finish was Jason Sisti at first singles. He also drew his Shipley nemesis (the only player to beat Jason in the regular season). After dropping the first set, Jason found his game and won the next two without much drama. At third singles, Lenny had to play an unknown AFS player who ran everything down and got everything back. After also dropping a quick first set, Lenny buckled down for long rallies (even though he had already played a similar type of player from Shipley in the morning while his AFS opponent had gotten a bye). Slowly the tide turned and Lenny stayed true to the game plan (to physically outlast this guy). After winning the second set and having the obligatory 10 minute rest, the AFS player got a second wind and went up a break early in the third set. Lenny kept pressure on him until the AFS kid began to tire once again. Finally, Lenny ran him to the ground, winning the final set 6-4.
Next Tuesday, our singles player will have a rematch of last Thursday's Team Championship match-ups versus the Friends' Central players. It will be played at Moorestown Friends.

Friends Schools League Individual Finals
Tue 05/24/2011 @ 3:30 PM
Our three singles players had to play indoors for the third time in 8 days. They were better prepared mentally and were more accustomed to the fast courts and tricky lighting conditions. Gottleib and Pinkus put up a great fight giving it their all and ending up in pouring sweat. They came up short in score, but tall in grace and comportment. Devon finished second at second singles and Lenny did the same at third singles. At first singles, Jason Sisti got off to a strong start dominating his opponent and winning the first set easily (6-1). Things got considerably tighter on the second and third set, but Jason kelt the pressure on his FCS opponent. Even thought he lost the second set 6-4, he easily won the third set 6-3. This was Jason's third consecutive first singles title!
