Varsity Girls Lacrosse 2011-2012 Season

  • George School vs Stuart Country Day School (Scrimmage)

    Fri 03/30/2012 @ 4:00 PM
  • George School vs St. Basil Academy - Tue 04/03/2012 @ 3:45 PM

    Loss  14-16
The GS varsity lacrosse team played its first game of the season against a new opponent, St. Basil Academy. The GS team came onto the field with a determination to win every ball, whether in the air or on the ground, double-team their opponents at every chance, and go hard to goal to score. Although we lost a close one, 16-14, the girls played one of the best first games I have seen played by a GS lax team. The girls played great defense, coming up with 12 caused turnovers (led by senior midfielder Alyssa Carcia and junior defender Theresa Menna with 3 each) and earning 35 groundballs (which are actual stats indicating winning the ball after a turnover). Alyssa led the charge with the groundballs, winning 8, while junior goalkeeper Yen Ahn Nguyen picked up 5 while in goal. Yen Ahn played tough in goal, earning 9 saves.

The team played aggressively in the midfield and showed great physical conditioning and endurance as the majority of the players had to play every minute of the game due to a large number of absences. On attack, Meredith Allen showed great individual skills, attacking goal, scoring 4 goals off of 7 shots, While junior newcomer Jess Minderjahn, dazzled people with her speed, quickness, and footwork, while putting 4 goals (7 shots) into the back of the net. Sophomore attack Ali Sacchi scored 3 excellent goals as well. Sophomore center Taylor Campellone scored once, as did Alyssa Carcia and freshman Eliza Marris. Eliza also showed great team play with one beautiful assist. This team has a lot of talent. It will be great fun to watch them grow and progress as individuals and as a team as the season progresses!

  • George School vs Pennington School - Thu 04/05/2012 @ 4:00 PM

    Loss  12-17
The varsity girls’ lacrosse team traveled to New Jersey, ready to take on a perennial foe, Pennington School! Although injury and sickness has depleted the squad in recent days, the girls still entered the game with a desire to play the best possible team game, leaving everything out on the field by the end of the game. The Cougars did not disappoint, as every girl stepped up and played some excellent lacrosse. It was a fun game to watch. The midfielders did an outstanding job, double-teaming and checking the stick at every opportunity. We caused 22 turnovers and picked up 28 groundballs (which include interceptions and knockdowns!).

I was particularly impressed with freshmen Eliza Marris, who scored 4 goals and added 1 assist and Katie McDonough, who put in 2 goals and also added an assist. Jess Minderjahn, scored another 4 goals, averaging 4 per game at the start of the season. Ali Sacchi, a sophomore attacker player, showed her poise on attack, scoring and assisting once during the game! She also ran down the ball in the midfield, earning 3 ground balls and 2 caused turnovers. Senior captain led the squad in caused turnovers with 5 and winning an impressive 6 ground balls! Senior midfielder Alyssa Carcia continues to zip up and down the field on offense and defense, winning 3 draw controls, picking up 3 groundballs, and causing 2 turnovers. Theresa Menna, a junior defender, played a smart game, quietly picking off a number of balls during the game, earning 4 GBs. Taylor Campellone ran hard throughout the game, playing a steady and aggressive one, with 2 draw controls, as well as 2 caused turnovers. Carly Rodgers, a senior goalkeeper, made 6 nice saves, off of 12 shots, while Yen Ahn Nguyen, made 12 saves off of 23 shots. Overall, I was pleased with the effort today. Every girl played hard until the last second, encouraging each other to play their best! The passing was much better today, as we changed the ball quickly from side to side of the field. Next up, Perkiomen School on Tuesday! Come out and support us! Go, GS Cougars!

  • George School vs Perkiomen School - Tue 04/10/2012 @ 4:00 PM

    Win  14-6
Although short of players due to sickness and injury, the George School girls’ varsity lacrosse team played Perkiomen School on a cool and blustery Tuesday afternoon. George School picked up where they left off last game, playing a fast and aggressive game. The entire team played most of the game, running full speed up and down the field, passing the ball beautifully and coming up with the majority of draw controls.

Leading the way for the Cougars were Jess Minderjahn, who scored 4 goals (maintaining her 4 goal average), Ali Sacchi, who scored a perfect 4 goals off of 4 shots, Eliza Marris, who had 2 goals and 2 assists, Katie McDonough, with 1 goal and a team high 3 assists, Alyssa Carcia, who scored 2 goals, and Taylor Campellone, who put in 1 goal. Winning the draw control and the groundballs were the key for GS in this game. Minderjahn, won 4 DC and 4GB, while Alyssa Carcia had a team high 5 groundballs. Meredith Allen and Ali duBoulay, two of our fearless captains, earned 2 draw controls each, and both were in the mix during both offensive and defensive play! Shelly Chipimo, Theresa Menna, Jackie Knoll, and Sadie Homeier continue to impress me with their defensive positioning, ability to see the play development, and desire to come up with the ball. Taylor Campellone and Allen continue to take the draws for us and are doing a great job covering both ends of the field, as is Kate Wurz. Both of our goalies, Carly Rodgers and Yen Ahn Nguyen played in the game today, with Rodgers earning 2 saves off of 3 shots and Yen Ahn making 3 saves off of 7 shots. The team keeps improving. They are motivated, hard working, supportive, and passionate about the game.

Next game is Friday, April 13, at 7:00 p.m.—yes a night game under the lights at New Hope-Solebury High School. Come one and all to support these girls! The more people, the better! Go, GS Cougars!

  • George School vs New Hope-Solebury High School - Fri 04/13/2012 @ 7:00 PM

    Win  14-7
The George School girls’ varsity lacrosse team took to the road to play New Hope-Solebury High School for the first time ever. It was an especially fun game to play, as the team played “under the lights” on their field at 7:00 p.m. The girls played an exciting and fast-paced game from the moment they stepped onto the field! Every girl played with intensity and a desire to win throughout the game. GS persevered and earned a well-deserved victory over NHSHS, outscoring the other team by a score of 14-7. The team played aggressively on defense and in the midfield, earning a total of 35 groundballs (change of possession) and causing 15 turnovers.

Senior captain Meredith Allen led the charge on defense, picking up an impressive 7 groundballs! Junior midfielder Jess Minderjahn, sophomore attack Ali Sacchi, and junior midfielder Kate Wurz helped the team, earning 5 GBs. Junior defender Shelly Chipimo led the team in caused turnovers with 3, with junior midfielder Alyssa Carcia, junior defender Minderjahn, and A. Sacchi helping the cause with 2 CTs each! The defense did a beautiful job double teaming and communicating through each half. The transition from offense to defense and from defense to offense was quick and precise.

On attack, we played a poised and confident game, attacking goal on fastbreaks, but also slowing down the game when necessary! Jess Minderjahn continues to pace the team with a new game high of 5 goals. Her footwork and lightning-fast moves are fun to watch! We had two hat tricks on the field with Meredith Allen scoring 3 beautiful goals, and sophomore Taylor Campellone scoring a trio, her first of the season. Carcia, who was all over the field helping offense and defense, scored once and added an assist in her play. Wurz, A. Sacchi, and freshman Eliza Marris placed one goal a piece between the pipes as well. Team play was evident with all of the assists today! Along with Carcia, freshman Katie McDonough, A. Sacchi, and Wurz all had one assist, showing unselfish play and the ability to see the play develop! In the goal, junior Yen Ahn Nguyen made 6 saves and stepped out of the goal to win 2 groundballs, while senior goalkeeper Carly Rodgers made 3 saves and picked up 1 GB. I was so proud of the team today. They fought hard, ran constantly, put pressure on the ball, and went hard to goal! Next game is Tuesday against Moorestown Friends School. It will be our first League contest and a good test for us! Come out and support the girls! Cheer loud and proud! Go, GS Cougars!

  • George School vs Moorestown Friends School - Tue 04/17/2012 @ 4:00 PM

    Loss  10-11
The girls’ varsity lacrosse team played their first FSL game today, hosting Moorestown Friends School, on a beautiful day. It was quite an exciting game with the lead changing a number of times throughout the contest. Although George School lost 11-10 (in the last minute of play), Missy Keller (assistant coach) and I could not have been more proud of our players, once again, who never stop fighting for the ball until the last whistle was blown!

George School scored the first goal of the day at the 21:54 mark, with Eliza Marris scoring her first of three goals. Ali Sacchi assisted on the goal, threading the ball through a string of defenders onto Eliza’s stick! The defense took over for our team in the both halves, playing aggressively, tenaciously, and wisely! The defenders (Theresa Menna, Shelly Chipimo, Jackie Knoll, Taylor Campellone, Ali duBoulay), plus our midfielders (Alyssa Carcia, Meredith Allen, and Kate Wurz) double-teamed and pressured the MFS attack. Carly Rodgers did a superb job in the goal, earning 11 saves off of 18 shots (with 7 goals scored by MFS), while Yen Ahn Nguyen stepped into the goal cage to change it up for a bit, earning 1 save off of 5 shots (with 4 goals scored). The standout performance on defense in this game was the play of junior standout Theresa Menna who scooped up every groundball near her to earn an impressive 10 groundballs (change of possession), a team high for the season. Allen, duBoulay, and Ali Sacchi all earned a trio of groundballs a piece as well to help the defensive cause! Low defender, Chipimo, caused three crucial turnovers, as did Allen, showing a focused determination to win the ball, a desire to win, and a lot of poise!

We did a great job winning the draw today with a number of players coming up with the ball, including Allen and Carcia leading the pack with three draws apiece, while Jess Minderjahn won 2 and Wurz and Chipimo picking up one each. Our attack was faced with a sagging and aggressive Moorestown defense. As the day went on, we began passing the ball more effectively as we drew the defense. We are not scared to attack goal, which is great, and we got off some powerful shots. Leading the way for the Cougars were Eliza Marris, who as a freshman has shown incredible poise, determination, and skill. Marris scored 3 goals (5 shots) and added an assist along the way. Three of our girls scored 2 goals each; Allen (7 shots), Carcia (2 shots), and Sacchi (3 shots). Minderjahn put in 1 goal, running the field and scoring with less than 10 seconds left in the first half to put us ahead 5-4 going into the halftime. Today we had 5 assists (a good sign of team play and quick ball movement). Campellone had 2 and Marris, Katie McDonough, and Wurz each had 1.

The varsity players who were unable to play today (Allie Goldberg, Sadie Homeier, Chesa Sacchi, Julia Savage, and Julia Um) and the GS Cougar Crazies were loud and proud in their support of the team. The cheers are much appreciated and provide a wonderful game day atmosphere for our team! Anne LeDuc, a former GS athletic director and lacrosse coach and the Moms of two of our coaches, Robyn Herman and Missy Keller, came to the game today to support the team. Both Herman and Keller were standout athletes themselves at GS, playing three sports including lacrosse. It is nice to have the GS Lacrosse tradition running so strong! Although we did not win, we learned a lot of lessons today about ourselves as a team and will carry them forward into our next game. We play Westtown, away, on Friday at 4:00 p.m.; a big game for us for League standings, as well as for the school for MOOSE points. We would love it if you could come and support us! Go, GS Cougars!!!

  • George School vs Westtown School - Fri 04/20/2012 @ 3:45 PM

    Loss  8-9
George School traveled to Westtown on Friday, ready to take on the Moose of Westtown. This was a big contest for GS, not only because it was a League game, but also because it was being played for the Patterson Cup, aka Moose points! George School fought a valiant battle, playing with intensity and determination. Despite injuries and pure exhaustion from a busy week, GS did everything we could to earn a victory, only to fall two points short in the end, with Westtown winning 9-8.

It was quite a fierce defensive game, with standout performances by defenders, Theresa Menna (8 groundballs, 6 caused turnovers), Shelly Chipimo (2 draws, 2GBs, 2CTs), and Jackie Knoll (2GBs, 2CTs), and midfielders, Alyssa Carcia (5GBs, 1CT and 2 draws), Allie duBoulay (who ran all over the field helping her teammates to double-team), and Kate Wurz (2 draws, 2GBs, 2CTs). Senior Meredith Allen was on fire in the game, taking the draw and racing towards goal to score 3 beautiful goals for the team. Eliza Marris and Katie McDonough continue to show wonderful poise and maturity for freshmen, adding a total of three goals between them. Ali Sacchi put in a beautiful lay-up shot over the goalie, into the upper corner of the goal and Taylor Campellone placed one goal between the pipes as well. Julia Um, Sadie Homeier, and Kyra Spence added good depth to the team as well with their consistent effort and positive support of their teammates!

Carly Rodgers did a nice job in goal today for GS, saving 5, off of 15 shots. Second year goalie, Yen Ahn Nguyen stepped into the goal for a short time as well for the Cougars! We also asked three JV players to help in the game today. Freshmen, Jill Kirk, Aislinn Keenan, and Meghan Troup were wonderful to have as back-ups, and show us great promise for the future of GS Lacrosse! A special shout-out goes to our manager, Keenan Halpin, who supports this team in every manner! He does everything for us and with us and is very much a part of the team!

  • George School vs Lower Moreland High School - Wed 04/25/2012 @ 4:00 PM

    Win  17-6
The girls’ varsity lacrosse team traveled to Lower Moreland High School, a local public school. The goal today was for the girls to play as a team, with energy and desire to win every ball. The girls did not let anyone down, for as soon as they stepped onto the field, they were on fire! The ball was passed quickly and precisely and our transition, from offense to defense and vice versa, was smooth and quick! We struck quickly, with Taylor Campellone, leading the way. Campellone put in 5 goals, a career high, while winning 2 draws, picking up 2 groundballs, and causing 1 turnover. Eliza Marris and Meredith Allen continue their scoring ways, with 4 and 3 goals respectively. Allen also picked up a team high, 4 draws, showing focus and strength in the midfield. 5 members of the team scored one goal apiece; Kate Wurz, Ali Sacchi, Katie McDonough, Sadie Homeier (first goal of the season), and Allie duBoulay. duBoulay not only scored a goal, but also assisted in two other scores along the way! A. Sacchi also had an assist, along with Kate Wurz. Wurz was the star of the game, playing a consistent, aggressive, and fast game today. She ran all over the field, without having to stop for a breath. Wurz earned a team high 4 groundballs, caused 3 turnovers, and won 3 draws. You would never know that Wurz just started playing lacrosse when she came to George School!

Defense continues to protect the goal, double team, force bad shots, and win the ball on the ground. Shelly Chipimo (1 DC, 3 GB), Theresa Menna (3 GB), Julia Savage (3 GB), Julia Um (2CT), Alyssa Carcia (1DC)and Jackie Knoll (1DC) played with a determination to stop the attack from scoring. Kyra Spence did a great job today, along with her attacking teammates, with pressuring the other team when they have the ball, trying to force a turnover. Spence had 1 GB and 1 caused turnover in the contest. Our goalies, Carly Rodgers and Yen Ahn Nguyen continue to share duty in the goal and are working hard to stop shots on goal. We also have been bringing up three players from JV to help the varsity due to so many injuries this season. Freshmen Meghan Troup, Jill Kirk, and Aislinn Keenan have graciously sat on the bench, prepared to go into the game at a seconds notice. Today, Troup was asked to play and she did not let us down, earning 1 draw, 2 groundballs, and 3 caused turnovers. The future indeed looks bright for GS lacrosse! Congrats to the team today for playing some beautiful lacrosse. What a wonderful group of girls to work with! Next game is on Cougar Field, the turf, this Friday, April 27 at 4:00 p.m. with Abington Friends! Go, GS Cougars!

George School vs Lower Moreland High School Game Day Stats

  • George School vs Abington Friends School - Fri 04/27/2012 @ 4:00 PM

    Win  13-3
The girls’ varsity lacrosse team played their first game on Cougar Field, our new turf field, against Friends Schools League opponent, Abington Friends School. The girls were eager to play a game on the turf and to show how far they have come as a team since day one of the season. The team didn’t let anyone down, as they played a beautiful all-around TEAM game, beating the Kangaroos 13-3. The passing was quick and precise, and we used both sides of the field effectively as we brought the ball down onto attack.

Leading the way on offense for the Cougars was sophomore, Ali Sacchi, who was on fire, scoring 4 goals and adding 1 assist along the way. Eliza Marris continues to pump in the goals, placing 3 between the pipes! Meredith Allen and Alyssa Carcia, each added 2, while Taylor Campellone and Katie McDonough each scored once and assisted once. Kyra Spence and Kate Wurz helped the cause as well, by each making one key assist apiece during the contest. Once again our midfielders and defense continued to run the field, taking control of the game and staying focused, intense, and determined throughout the game. The number one goal is to stop the ball from getting to the goal, and they did not let their teammates down! So many players had ground balls (change of possession) and caused turnovers today, an impressive showing by these talented athletes! Kate Wurz continues to show consistency, perseverance, and resiliency, earning 9 groundballs and causing 7 turnovers. Supporting her were her teammates, Alyssa Carcia (5GB/2CT), Allie duBoulay (4GB/2CT), Theresa Menna (3GB/4CT), Meredith Allen 3GB/2CT), Jackie Knoll (1GB), Sadie Homeier (1GB) , Julia Um (1GB) and Julie Savage (2GB). Although stats are important, many of the groundballs and caused turnovers were the results of two or three teammates helping to chase down the ball together!

I was happy to see also that our attack quickly transitioned from offense to defense, helping the cause and coming up with the ball as well. Katie McDonough (6GB/2CT), Kyra Spence (3GB), and Ali Sacchi (4GB/3CT) all contributed in crucial ways! Meredith Allen earned 3 draw controls today, recognizing that winning the draw is one of the keys to the game of lacrosse! Both goalies continue to step up in the goal, blocking shots, clearing balls, and coming out of the crease to win groundballs. Both Carly Rodgers and Yen Ahn Nguyen have shown great strides in their development as goalkeepers! I continue to be so proud of this group of individuals, who have worked hard throughout the season to be the best they can be! Pele (a world class soccer player) once said “Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice, and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do.” These girls have shown tremendous effort and true passion for this sport! They continue to give of themselves for the betterment of the team. What more can I ask for! Keep up the good work, girls! Go, GS Cougars!

  • George School vs Neshaminy High School - Sat 04/28/2012 @ 12:00 PM

    Win  13-8
It was a great day for girls’ lacrosse at GS, as the team played local public school, Neshaminy High School on the turf; the first game of a doubleheader with the boys’ varsity lacrosse team. The team did an outstanding job, coming away with a big win! Final score: GS 13, Neshaminy 8. Most impressive today was the work of the goalies, junior Yen Ahn Nguyen and senior Carly Rodgers, who combined, made 13 saves off of 21 shots. Both goalies played aggressive games, stepping out of the goal circle to win the ball. Yen Ahn, set a personal record by getting 3 groundballs and causing 2 turnovers, while Carly stepped up to cause 2 turnovers and win 1 groundball.

The offense showed determination and aggressiveness in both halves as well, shooting at goal 37 times! Leading the way was Taylor Campellone, who scored 5 goals off of 7 shots. Meredith Allen had another hat trick today, her sixth multiple-goal game! Ali Sacchi picked up 3 points for her team by scoring 2 beauties and assisting in another. Sophomore, Kyra Spence, scored her first goal of the season, a powerful, well-placed shot from the left side of the arc. Alyssa Carcia and Sadie Homeier both, zipping down the field on fire, put in 1 goal apiece, while 2 other Cougars, Katie McDonough and Kate Wurz, passed to their teammates for an assist each. Draw control was huge today, with Allen and Allie duBoulay, grabbing 4 and 3 draws respectively. duBoulay (4gb/3ct), along with her teammates, Shelly Chipimo (4gb/5ct), Allen (4 gb), Theresa Menna (5gb/3ct)and Kate Wurz (6gb/4ct) were superb on defense and in the midfield. Running down players, double-teaming, checking, and sliding off to help their teammates, all difficult skills, were done to perfection today by this group of girls, along with their fellow teammates.

Lots of good things were done today, on and off the field. Kudos also needs to be given to all the support people on the sidelines, who can’t play for one reason or another. Each player supports their teammates in so many ways, whether it is an encouraging comment to a teammate, a plate of fresh homemade cookies for the team, a pat on the back, a willingness to keep track of game day statistics, a decision to help out by filling up water bottles, or a hearty cheer for the team; all of these roles are important and invaluable to the unification of this team! Well done, girls! Next game; GS at Academy of the New Church on Tuesday! Come and support us! Go, GS Cougars!
