George School Day Camp: Employment
George School Day Camp is an equal opportunity employer. We are looking for individuals who show interest and ability in working with kids and know how to work as part of a team. Each hired member of the staff must fill out necessary Child Abuse Clearance and Police Background checks. All employees under the age of eighteen must have working papers from the school district in which they live.
We expect employees to abide by the guidelines of George School Day Camp as well as the campus rules for George School itself.
Hours of Operation All staff members are expected to arrive at work by 8:45 a.m. and stay until 3:15 p.m.
Dates of Employment It is expected that since the day camp is only in operation for seven weeks (thirty-four working days) each employee will work every day of the camp season. Occasionally, some employees are hired to fill in for one of the offered sessions (first three weeks or last four weeks). There are up to two mandatory pre-camp training days that you will need to attend. These training sessions are very important to learning the expectations associated with your position. There is no additional pay for these training days. Missing the scheduled training days will result in a $25 deduction from the first paycheck earned at the end of the first week of camp. Dates and times will be established and written into your employee contracts.
Again, because the camp season is only thirty-four days long, employees will be not be paid for missed days. We ask that you give us the professional courtesy to call in if you are too sick to attend work.
Hired Positions There are several hired positions within the day camp staff. Select a position title below for more information.
Activity LeaderActivity Leaders are typically career teachers or college-age employees. Activity leaders will be scheduled to lead a group for any of the wide variety of day camp activities that are scheduled throughout the day. While at the activity, the activity leader is considered the adult in charge and is expected to provide campers with the supervision and instruction for safe play for the duration of the scheduled period. Interest in working with children, group management skills, knowledge of games/activities, and outgoing personalities are all among the skills needed for this important staff position.
Activity leader salary scale is based on years of experience and age.
RETURN TO TOPCounselorCounselors will be assigned to work with one group for the entire camp session. The role of counselor (group leader) is very important. The counselor will be the one who will get to know the campers the best. The counselor will transition with his/her group through the daily activities. It is expected that counselors will actively participate in all of the scheduled activities of their group except when the group is in the pool. Counselors need to have an outgoing personality. They should show an interest in working with kids, consistently demonstrate good group management skills, and be willing to learn new ones.
Counselor salary is determined by a set pay scale based on years of experience and age.
RETURN TO TOPJunior Counselor (JC)A JC is most often a graduated Counselor in Training (CIT). Occasionally, due to a former CIT not returning the following summer, we look to hire new JCs to fill their spot.

JCs must be fifteen years old by the start of day camp. Working papers (from your local school district), a W-4 form and other information must also be obtained.
JCs are paid $450 for the full seven-week session. JCs are paid in four equal installments: end of weeks one, three, five, and seven. All state and federal taxes are withheld.

Counselor in Training (CIT)A CIT is a paid position at George School Day Camp. In order to be eligible to apply for a CIT position, applicants must turn fourteen years old before May 1. Those who turn fourteen after that date may return as a camper for one more year. Applicants must obtain working papers from the school district in which they live. You do this by calling your district office to pick up the papers. You must appear in person, with proper identification. Once you obtain the form, please fill out the personal information pertaining to you. Then, send it to the day camp. We will fill out the employer portion and return it to you. Your district will then sign and submit it for processing. This process may take up to three weeks, so be sure to start early.
CITs are employees and therefore are asked to sign an employee contract. This contract outlines basic rules of behavior and basic job expectations. The salary for CITs is $200 for the seven-week session. All employees are paid four times over the seven weeks: end of weeks one, three, five, and seven. State and federal taxes are withheld.
If hired, each CIT will be assigned to work with one or more groups. In these groups, CITs are expected to assist the counselor with the group. The CIT experience involves observing how the lead counselor operates the group and handles situations, decision-making processes, inter-group conflicts, etc. The CIT is expected to participate in all activities scheduled for the group. In addition, each CIT will be assigned various duties that are crucial to the smooth operation of the day camp.
Each CIT will participate in weekly workshops that will take place during regular camp hours. These workshops are designed to better prepare CITs for the situations that arise as a camp counselor.
All CIT applications are due in to the day camp office by November 1. A completed application must include a recent photo of the applicant as well as an Employee Personal Recommendation Form mailed or faxed separately by person filling out the form.
A committee of day camp administrators will consider each application. Obviously, all applicants are not accepted. You will receive notification of our decision by the end of December.
