George School Day Camp: Groups

We have three basic divisions in camp: Little Camp (ages 6-7), Junior Camp (ages 8-10), and Senior Camp (ages 10-14). Within each division, campers are placed in gender-divided groups based on chronological age. For example, a group of six-year-old girls will mirror a group of six-year-old boys. Depending on the number of campers, there will be some mixed age grouping. For example, there may be some older six-year olds grouped with younger seven-year olds to fill out a group.

The grouping of campers is an arduous task made even more difficult when trying to mix various personalities, friends, and classmates, as well as parental requests. We group campers by chronological age, rather than the grade level they are in at school. Whereas we do try to accommodate certain reasonable requests, we simply cannot guarantee placement. Camp is a social situation. We have found that even though campers initially feel a sense of comfort knowing someone else in their group, kids are resilient and very adept at making new friends and acquaintences in each new situation. We ask that if we cannot meet your grouping request that you allow the situation to be a learning experience. We spend a great deal of time working with our staff, who will make every effort to make all campers adjust into camp as smoothly as possible.
