The work of fifteen young George School alumni who have made visual arts the focus of their studies and careers is currently on view in Walton Center Gallery on the George School campus through the end of January.
The show includes the work of three artists who have studied their craft in the Philadelphia area: Alex Cohen, who is currently a senior painting major at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia; Corey McNaught, who received his degree in illustration from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia; and jeweler Laura Satterthwaite, who has studied at Bucks County Community College, Tyler Craft Center in Richboro, and Moore College of Art in Philadelphia. Laura, Corey, and Alex graduated from George School in 1999.
The show also includes work by photographers Ife Abdus-Salam, Simon Biswas, Nikki Miller, and Nat Ward (all members of George School's Class of 2002); graphic designers Kenny Lee (Class of 2001) and Howard Lin (Class of 2000), woodworkers Lloyd Moyer (Class of 1996) and Sam Moyer (Class of 1993); architect Wayne Chen (Class of 1999); fine arts major Ryan Kirwan (Class of 2002); interior designer Angela Smallacombe (Class of 2001), and weaver Lizzy Roberds (Class of 2002).
The alumni exhibition is part of a series of shows sponsored by the George School arts department for the 2005-2006 academic year. All George School students take four year-long courses in the arts. The arts department offers courses in painting and drawing, photography, woodworking and furniture design, ceramics, vocal and instrumental music, dance, theater arts, journalism, and video production. The arts department encourages students to be creative and enjoy themselves while they practice and appreciate a specific art form. In addition, students learn to be discriminating when they evaluate their own and others' work.
