George School Food Service Director Joe Ducati of CulinArt Inc. and Jonathan Snipes of Snipes Farm in Morrisville, Pennsylvania, will present an all-school assembly about sustainable food on Monday, September 15, 2008, at George School. The event will take place from 9:50 to 10:25 a.m. in Walton Center Auditorium.

Joe and Jonathan (a 1978 graduate of George School) will describe the school’s ongoing efforts to serve local, organic food in its dining room. Part of a campus-wide commitment to environmental sustainability, these efforts include a farm-to-school program that brings produce from Snipes Farm to George School’s dining room, and an on-campus garden (at George School) that provides organic vegetables for school meals.

The two speakers will also highlight the newly expanded on-campus composting program that was created through the joint efforts of TERRA (George School’s student environmental group) and the school’s food service and grounds departments. The program brings over a thousand pounds of otherwise landfill-bound garbage from the kitchen and dining room to the campus compost heap each week.

Head of School Nancy Starmer said, “As an outgrowth of our commitment to Friends testimonies, George School has always been concerned with environmental stewardship. We are now pursuing an exciting new goal—that of becoming a leader in the area of environmental sustainability. I am glad that Joe and Jonathan will be speaking about their work, which links what we are doing here at George School to efforts in Bucks County to support local farms. The beginning of a new school year is a wonderful time, and we are in a wonderful location, to educate our students about sustainability and the ways in which each person can contribute.”
