Eleven lettermen return from the George School Varsity Boys Soccer team that finished fourth in the Friends Schools League (FSL) with a 5-6-3 record in 2008 and lost in the semifinals in a shootout to eventual undefeated champion Shipley.
“Several of our skilled players can do well in multiple positions,” said Head Coach Paul Machemer ’65. “I suspect that it will take us a while to figure out our most effective offense and thus to jell as a team, but I think we have the talent to challenge for the playoffs and perhaps a championship.”
Jas Chojnowski ’10 (Churchville, PA) returns as a goalkeeper. Quick and courageous with good hands, Jas earned FSL All-League status last year. Jas, one of our tallest players, could also play some in the field as a stopper if Simon James ’12 (Ardmore, PA) develops as expected as a keeper. Simon will also contend for a central defensive role.
In addition to Simon and Jas, Wyeth Howard ’10 (Danbury, CT) and Jae Hyuk Jang ’10 (Seoul, South Korea) have the size and speed to be effective in the middle. Sean Potter ’12 (Berryville, VA) returns as sweeper, but might be challenged by Walter Lomax ’11 (Chalfont, PA) who is a skilled midfielder.
On the outside, Nathaniel McGuinness ’10 (Hulmeville, PA) and Dan Gutierrez ’10 (Bethesda, MD) have a lot of experience. Other potential wing backs include the left-footed Drew Fisher ’12 (New Hope, PA), Max Maloberti ’11 (Lawrenceville, NJ), Ian Culleton ’11 (Newtown, PA), Hyung Min Lee ’10 (Seoul, Korea), and Caleb Smith ’12 (Millboro, VA). It is also possible that a new student or one of the experienced midfielders will fill the role.
Most of the returning players have experience in midfield and forward roles. Tommy Lodge-Yanez ’12 (Langhorne, PA) passes and tackles well, and has a thunderous shot. Aidan Schmidtberger ’10 (Upper Black Eddy, PA) has skill and vision while Richie Schulz ’11 (Richboro, PA) has electric speed and rapidly improving skills. Andy Chavez ’11 (Langhorne, PA) will be in the mix.
Seumas Trull ’10 (Bridgetown, NJ), a three-year letterman with exquisite skills, and Cameron Bentley ’10 (Yardley, PA.), an exceptional all-arounder, will be the lynchpins of the attack. Both have experience as strikers, as wings, and as midfielders and are expected to see extended playing time.
Other potential midfielders include Devon Pinkus ’11 (Bensalem, PA), Lomax, Nate Philips ’12 (Morrisville, PA), Nick Roman ’12 (Willow Grove, PA), and Anthony Verleysen ’12 (Morrisville, PA)
Gabe Haug ’12 (Ivyland, PA) has scored frequently on younger teams as a central striker and will get his chances this season. Jang is another candidate.
Of course, there may be students new to the school who will also compete for playing time but their names are unavailable at press time.

Interesting Facts George School's overall record in August 2009 after the 2008 season and ninety-eight years of interscholastic soccer is 569-413-154. This records three wins in shootouts as ties and they are commonly changed to wins (while losses remain ties). The official record might therefore be 572-413-151.
Paul Machemer’s overall record is 225–141–42 (including three victories in playoff shootouts that would have been recorded as ties if lost).
