Sarah Sharp—a social studies teacher at William Penn Charter School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania—traveled to Holguin, Cuba in July 2009 with George School’s
Global Service Program. While in Cuba, she and eight other educators helped to repair a Quaker church that was damaged in a 2008 hurricane. A photo journal of her experience can be viewed on Penn Charter’s site at Flickr.
“When you do service, whether it is in Philadelphia or in Holguin, Cuba, people let you in,” Sarah said in
Penn Charter, the magazine of William Penn Charter School. “They let you in. They show you their vulnerabilities and you learn about their lives in a different way. It is awesome.”
