Edwin Marks—who teaches social studies to the Upper School at William Penn Charter School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania—participated in George School’s
Global Service Program in July 2009. After two days of training workshops, he traveled to China to help rebuild the community of Zhongba, a rural village in Sichuan province that was devastated by the 2008 earthquake.
“Quakers have understood the importance of international service for decades,” Edwin says on Penn Charter's website, describing why he decided to take part in the program. “We live in a truly global community where interactions and connections are growing every day, and international service helps to establish those connections.”
