GS Hosts Pizza Party for Young Alumni and Senior Class

With the start of the new year, members of George School’s senior class and five most recent classes of alumni will gather on campus for a pizza party on January 7 at 6:00 p.m. This event for the Classes of 2006 to 2011 is scheduled to take place in the renovated McFeely building.

GS Varsity Girls Basketball Wins in Overtime

The varsity girls’ basketball team opened up Friends League play with a thrilling 28-26 overtime victory on the road over Abington Friends School. Despite getting off to a slow start offensively, the Cougar defense was relentless as it held Abington to 11 points in the first half.

George School students will celebrate Holiday Weekend on December 10–12, 2010, a beloved annual tradition at George School. A focal point of the event is the semiformal Holiday Dance, held on the evening of Saturday, December 11, at 8:00 p.m. in Main Dining Room. The dance is sponsored by George School’s day student prefects, student leaders who provide support for their peers.

Friends Schools League Honors GS Athletes

Thirteen George School athletes representing soccer, field hockey, and cross country were honored on the Friends Schools League’s roster of fall 2010 all-league teams. A coeducational high school athletic league made up of nine Philadelphia-area independent schools, the Friends Schools League is founded on the principles of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) and fosters respectful behavior and good sportsmanship on the playing field.

George School Practices Lockdown Drill

On Monday morning, November 8, George School had a lockdown drill to practice our preparedness in the event of an intruder or criminal act. Students were notified about an upcoming drill and were given instructions about what to do when they hear the siren. Faculty and staff members have been trained throughout the academic year in preparation for this new form of safety drill.

Admission Open House Scheduled October 24

Renovated History Building Opens

George School students are learning history in seven new, high-tech, and eco-friendly classrooms now that the renovated McFeely building has opened for classes with the start of the new school year. A seven-month green renovation has transformed the McFeely building, once the school’s library, into the home of the History Department.

George School is proud to announce that its Learning Commons and Mollie Dodd Anderson Library has been awarded LEED® Gold certification. George School Day Camp (GSDC) celebrated the end of a successful 2010 season with its annual Camper Variety Show on August 12. A summer program on the George School campus for children ages six to fourteen, GSDC attracted the largest camper population in its history this summer, with a peak enrollment of 278.

According to a new study produced by Emily Falk ’99 and her colleagues at the University of California, Los Angeles, neuroscientists can successfully predict human behavior through brain scanning. The study shows that the scientists predicted whether or not twenty people would use sunscreen during a one-week period.

GS Student Named Bucks County High School Poet of the Year

George School sophomore Ashley Choi has been named the 2010 Bucks County High School Poet of the Year by the Bucks County Poet Laureate Program. Ashley’s winning poems, which she produced in her George School English class, are a cycle of sonnets written as love letters between early-twentieth-century Italian painter Amedeo Modigliani and French artist Jeanne Hébuterne.

Childrens' Center Holds Hop-A-Thon

Red Square was filled with dozens of preschool students from George School Children’s’ Center (GSCC) on Thursday, April 15, 2010 as they hopped, skipped, and jumped to raise money for children stricken with muscular dystrophy, participating in the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s Hop-a-Thon Program.

Day of Silence Observed at George School

More than seventy-five students and George School community members took a vow of silence on April 14, 2010 to bring awareness to the harassment of gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgendered people. Another seventy individuals chose to take a vow of solidarity, actively supporting the spirit of the day and the people who were observing the silence. Together, they participated in the nationwide Day of Silence organized by the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network (GLSEN).

Art for Relief to Benefit Landmine Detection

Art for Relief, a student-organized night of art, will be held at George School on Saturday, April 10, 2010. This year, student efforts will benefit the Schonstedt Landmine Detection project. The evening will begin with an art show and silent auction at 6:00 p.m. in the meetinghouse and conclude with an array of humanitarian-themed performances at 7:30 p.m. in Walton Center Auditorium. Admission is free and open to the public.

Kari Becker Souders Exhibits "BodyQuilting" at GS

Strips of quilted fabric, oil paint, beeswax, lace, and fragments of text layered on canvas and wallpaper form the twenty-two mixed media paintings in BodyQuilting, an exhibit by artist Kari Becker Souders. Currently on display at George School’s Walton Center Gallery, the exhibit will run until March 4, 2010. An exhibit reception will take place on Saturday, February 20, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. in the gallery.

Talented Cast Revives West Side Story

Under the hot stage lights of Walton Center Auditorium, thirty-six students in George School’s Musical Theater class gather to practice and block the final scene of West Side Story. Maria cradles Tony, who has just died in her arms, shot by a rival gang member. While grieving for the love of her life, she must decide if she will seek revenge or use the moment to bring two warring gangs together in peace. There isn’t a dry eye in the house. West Side Story opens on Thursday, February 18, at 7:30 p.m. Performances on Friday, February 19, and Saturday, February 20, are at 8:00 p.m.

IB Science Retreat Delivers Results

Eighty International Baccalaureate (IB) science students from George School packed up their lab equipment and their overnight bags for a retreat at Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, during the weekend of January 15 to 17, 2010. The students—who are enrolled in George School’s IB classes in biology, physics, and environmental systems and societies—conducted group research projects on the topic of global warming.

Kathy Goodell Exhibits Nontraditional Artwork at GS

At first glance it looks like a scientific display: four wall surfaces of the Class of 1956 Gallery at George School’s Learning Commons and Mollie Dodd Anderson Library are filled with rows of three-by-five-inch cards marked with spherical images and spots. The cards are part of an installation entitled "Firmament" by artist Kathy Goodell, scheduled to be on view in the gallery until January 29, 2010.
