Art for Relief to Benefit Landmine Detection

Issued: Sunday, April 4, 2010

Art for Relief, a student-organized night of art, will be held at George School on Saturday, April 10, 2010. This year, student efforts will benefit the Schonstedt Landmine Detection project. The evening will begin with an art show and silent auction at 6:00 p.m. in the meetinghouse and conclude with an array of humanitarian-themed performances at 7:30 p.m. in Walton Center Auditorium. Admission is free and open to the public.

The art show will feature work produced and donated by students, faculty, and friends. The silent auction will include artwork contributed by local professional artists, along with other items donated by local businesses, alumni, and parents.

All proceeds from the event will go to Schonstedt Instrument Company for their project to help find unexploded ordinances in countries around the world. This year, George School students hope to raise $10,000 so that they can send twenty landmine detectors to where they are most needed.

About seventy countries are affected by landmines or explosive remnants of war, which together claimed nearly 5,200 casualties around the world last year. Landmines and explosive remnants of war also take a heavy toll on people's livelihoods, countries' economic and social development, and international peace-building efforts.
