A wall-hung cabinet created by George School
woodworking and furniture design teacher Carter Sio ’76 is featured in a new book,
500 Cabinets: A Showcase of Design and Craftsmanship.
Entitled “Shelf with Drawers,” the cabinet is made of ebonized Baltic plywood and bamboo. “I find combining bamboo with solid wood especially interesting since the contrast of color, texture, and shape is subtle, yet eye-catching,” explains Carter.
Published by Lark Books,
500 Cabinets highlights work selected by John Grew Sheridan, a designer and builder of furniture and sculpture. In the book’s introduction, Lark Books senior editor Ray Hemachandra states, “These 500 outstanding contemporary cabinets showcase the art and craft of fine furniture making. Each piece testifies to the design and technical skills of its creator, and has that most precious element of all: imagination.”
Carter created the cabinet at the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship in Rockport, Maine, during a spring 2008 sabbatical. He also spent time at the center this past summer in a class about turned and painted furniture, developing new ideas for his classes. Carter builds all of his furniture from his own designs.
