Broadway Features Sondheim Song Composed at GS

Issued: Thursday, April 22, 2010Author: Chris JonesPublication: chicagotribune.com

A new Broadway musical, Sondheim on Sondheim, celebrates the life and career of composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim ’46. The show includes a song that Stephen wrote as a George School student for By George, a student-written musical. Entitled “I’ll Meet You at the Donut,” the song is about a leather-upholstered circular seat that once surrounded a pillar in George School’s Main building. In the book George School: The History of a Quaker Community, the late Kingdon W. Swayne ’37 describes the donut as a place where boys and girls would meet when they were growing serious about each other. Such meetings were often arranged via a Kindness of Bearer note, or “KOB,” a specially folded letter delivered by a third party. Sondheim on Sondheim, produced by Roundabout Theatre Company, stars Barbara Cook, Vanessa Williams, and Tom Wopat. Read more.
