George School Day Camp (GSDC) celebrated the end of a successful 2010 season with its annual Camper Variety Show on August 12. A summer program on the George School campus for children ages six to fourteen, GSDC attracted the largest camper population in its history this summer, with a peak enrollment of 278.
The variety show concluded the camp’s seven-week
schedule, in which children learned and played as members of three different age-based camp groups: Little Camp (for ages six to seven), Junior Camp (for ages eight to ten), and Senior Camp (for ages ten to fourteen). All three groups participated in the variety show.
“Each camp group presents a dance or skit that they have worked on during the last camp session,” explained GSDC Director Steve Haines. “Many parents, grandparents, and siblings join us for this special day.” Campers’ family members were also welcome at two other GSDC
special events this summer: the Community Carnival on July 15 and the Movie Under the Stars on August 6.
Founded in 1977, GSDC draws on George School's
Quaker values, providing athletic and artistic activities in an environment that emphasizes respect for the individual, as well as individual responsibility for the group. Campers can enroll for the first three weeks of camp, the last four weeks, or all seven weeks. The 2010 season began on June 28.
“We provide campers with a variety of games and activities that help promote healthful recreation and fun,” said Steve. “This year, campers especially enjoyed staying cool on the large water slide and playing street hockey on our new portable hockey rink.”
Other camper activities this summer included kayaking, indoor rock climbing, mountain biking, miniature golf, bowling, a low-ropes team challenge course, dance, arts and crafts, theater, computer activities, nature appreciation, horseback riding, softball, tennis, swimming, soccer, handball, basketball, and volleyball.
