The varsity girls’ basketball team opened up Friends League play with a thrilling 28-26 overtime victory on the road over Abington Friends School. Despite getting off to a slow start offensively, the Cougar defense was relentless as it held Abington to 11 points in the first half.
Abington's team featured several good shooters from the outside, but the Cougar's 3-2 defense kept a hand in the face of their shooters all night long. The girls also did a good job of handling the full court pressure that Abington delivered the entire game.
Junior point guard, Stephanie Heys led all scorers with 12 points and she also added 4 rebounds and 3 assists. Stephanie converted a key basket to start the overtime period when senior Laety Walendom won the tip and Stephanie gathered up the loose ball and converted a layup. Laety contributed 5 rebounds to go along with 5 points.
One of the best performances was turned in by junior Jaye Plumb. Jaye seemed to be all over the court. Playing on the wing as a guard for the first time in her career, Jaye scored 8 points, gave 2 assists, and collected 4 rebounds.
Sophomore Caroline Martin started her first varsity game and proved to be a strong force down low as she gathered 5 assists and also gave out 2 assists.
Freshman guard Becca Hayden did a fantastic job of dribbling against the pressure defense and hit three key free throws during the overtime period.
With the win, the Cougars' record improved to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in the Friends League.
