Boys Track Team Sets New School Records

The Varsity Boys’ Indoor Track team got off to a great start this season. In the first meet on December 10, 2011 at Lehigh University, the sprinting team of Evan Clinton ’13, Jackson Liu ’14, Curran Prasad ’12, and Chandler Rex ’13 combined to run 4:03.07 and medaled in the 4x400-meter relay. In the distance events Alex Atwater ’13 lowered his indoor school record in the 800-meter run to 2:17.00 and Zander Giuffrida ’12 set a new indoor school record in the 3,000-meter run by running 10:22.76 in the fifteen lap race.

Priscilla Wiggins Qualifies for State Championships

Priscilla Wiggins ’12 qualified for the Indoor State Championships at the final Delaware Valley Girls Track Coaches Association meet on Friday at Ursinus College. Priscilla left nothing to chance in the stacked pre-holiday field for the one mile race. Her time of 5:17.07, well under the state qualifying time of 5:23.93, placed her in the top five in the state rankings in the mile for the season.

Each year, George School dance students and their teacher collaborate to produce a show that is entertaining for the audience. This year’s theme, Occupy North Pole, can be seen as a modern-day version of A Christmas Carol, where Ebenezer Scrooge’s heart is touched by a child.

Twenty-five George School alumni had a chance to reconnect with old friends and to forge new relationships during a gathering on Thursday, December 1, 2011, at the Westin Copley Plaza in Boston. Head of School Nancy Starmer and five other members of the George School staff were in Boston for The Association of Boarding Schools conference and invited alumni and friends in the area to get together.

Health Educator speaks at Parent Meeting on December 6

Brenda Conlan, a well-known health educator, will be bringing her lively, honest presentation style to parents on Tuesday, December 6 beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the Anderson Library Conference Room. This special program, which is sponsored by the George School Parents Association, will focus on how parents can maintain a dialogue with teens in order to help them navigate social life during high school.

GS Community Makes Fall Blood Drive a Success

On November 8, members of the George School community once again donated their time and their blood to collect 61 pints for the Red Cross. It was a solid number, especially considering that a computer problem halted collection temporarily and backed up donors.

Traveling Mercies Opens at George School

Photographer and activist Aldo Magazzeni is exhibiting his work, Traveling Mercies: Activism for a Better World, in Walton Gallery from December 5, 2011 to January 20, 2012. The exhibit features Aldo’s photographs during his global missions to assist communities in need. An artist reception is scheduled from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 8. Aldo will also share his experiences during a student assembly on Monday, December 19.

Susan Wilf Contributes Translations in Book by Nobel Laureate

Susan Wilf, George School English and History teacher, translated poems and essays included in No Enemies, No Hatred: Selected Essays and Poems, by Chinese writer and human rights activist Liu Xiaobo who was awarded the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize, despite being imprisoned for “inciting subversion of state power.” She also edited some of the essays.

Students on George School’s Ultimate Frisbee club team vanquished the faculty team 16-14 on November 2. The student-faculty match at the end of first term is a long-standing George School tradition and this year, the student team was out to revenge their 2010 loss.

Varsity Girls’ Cross Country Team Defeats Solebury School

George School’s varsity girls’ cross country team defeated Solebury School 23-38 in the final meet of the season on Tuesday, October 25, 2011. Nadia Ross ’13 nearly broke the George School girls’ course record on her way to her first individual victory of the season. Her time on the course (21:51) was the fastest time for a girl at George School since Morgan Siem in 2004. It was the third fastest time in the last decade by any George School runner on any 5,000-meter course.

Randy Bolton’s Work on Display at Anderson Library

Contemporary artist Randy Bolton’s work mimics the style of early children’s book and scientific illustration and has been characterized as “an exploration of images that seem familiar and comforting on first glance, but become strange and disturbing on further consideration.” A collection of his screen prints is on display at the Class of 1956 Gallery at the Mollie Dodd Anderson Library from October 27, 2011 to December 16, 2011. A gallery talk and artist reception is scheduled at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 27.

Teacher’s Work in Coastal Living Magazine

There, pictured in a summery breezeway looking out on a deck, is a free-edge walnut bench, designed and made by one George School alum (and current teacher), commissioned by another alum for the home of yet another, which is the subject of the article.

Students shared their Costa Rica service learning experiences at a George School assembly in Walton Center on October 14, 2011. Six students—Shelly Chipimo ’13, Jason Cincotta ’13, Jordon Friedman ’12, Simon James ’12, Damon McCasker ’13, and Owen Moon ’13—had traveled in the summer with trip leaders and teachers Pacho Gutierrez ’77 and Richard Polgar. Pottery Exhibit Features Work of GS Teacher

Ceramics and sculpture teacher Amedeo Salamoni’s “Turquoise Vase” can be seen as part of the nineteenth annual Strictly Functional Pottery National (SFPN), a juried exhibit of some of the country’s best current functional pottery. The wood-fired stoneware vase was one of only 110 works chosen by juror Mary Barringer from the 1,000 pieces submitted.

Community Chorus to Sing Messiah

More than forty members of the George School community came together on Sunday, September 11, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. for the first Community Chorus rehearsal of the 2011-12 season in the meetinghouse. This year, the Community Chorus is rehearsing the Christmas portion of Messiah and the "Hallelujah" Chorus. The Community Chorus concert is scheduled for Sunday, February 12, 2012.

Civil Rights Pioneer Activist Julian Bond Visits George School

George School welcomed civil rights pioneer H. Julian Bond ’57 to campus for an all-school assembly and discussions with students and faculty on Friday, September 9, 2011. Julian was joined by Mark K. Updegrove ’80, director of the Lyndon B. Johnson Library in Austin, Texas. During the assembly, Mark interviewed Julian about his experiences as a politician, civil rights and student activist, and his remembrances of being one of the few African-American students at George School.

For five weeks, she and 75 other high school students from twenty-eight countries learned about entrepreneurship, globalization, team building, project management, leadership, and cultural diversity in business as part of the Pennsylvania School for Global Entrepreneurship, on the campus of Lehigh University.

Katelyn Richerts ’12 ended her summer as a champion sailor in the 2011 Barnegat Bay Yacht Racing Association (BBYRA) Summer Championship Series. In addition to winning the final race in the BBYRA’s Junior Laser Radial series, she was the season’s overall class winner. Katelyn received her awards at the BBYRA’s prize ceremony on September 3, 2011.

George School Helps IB Dance Go Mainstream

Thanks to the success of the International Baccalaureate (IB) pilot program, Dance will become a worldwide, mainstream standard level and higher level course for first year teaching in September 2011, with first examinations in May 2013. George School was one of a small number of secondary schools that took part in the IB’s pilot dance program.

Ten George School students traveled to Vietnam in June to take part in a service project that included working with young children in an orphanage and painting, repairing, and cleaning facilities. While in Vietnam, the students took turns writing blog entries to share their experiences with families and friends.

George School Day Camp Concludes 34th Successful Season

In two sessions from June 27 to August 12, the regular high-school-age inhabitants of the George School campus were replaced by an energetic bunch of six- to fourteen-year-olds for the popular George School Day Camp (GSDC). After 34 years, there were many activities, traditions, and staff members that returned, but there were also new achievements. Notably, an enrollment of 279 campers set a record for this well-established camp.

Three Global Service Program Trips Complete

With participants representing thirteen schools in seven states, George School’s Global Service Program launched its first trip to Ecuador and third trips to China and Cuba. Intended to train future service-project leaders from secondary schools and enhance the scope and quality of international service trips for secondary school students, the Global Service Program enrolled eleven teachers, one administrator, and thirty students this year.

Three George School students have been honored in the 2011 Bucks County High School Poet of the Year Contest, chosen from over 150 entrants representing sixteen Bucks County high schools. On April 9 and 10, three George School teams again took part in the Trinity College Fire Fighting Home Robot Contest in Hartford, CT, one of the world's best known international robotics competitions. Empty Bowls Project Raises Funds for Local Charities

George School students and faculty members created, glazed, and donated approximately eighty bowls this year to participate in the Empty Bowls Project, an international grassroots effort to fight hunger. The bowls were sold by a cadre of students for $5 or $10 during Parents Conference Day on February 4, 2011. The $370 proceeds were split between the Trenton Area Soup Kitchen (TASK) and the Penndel Food Pantry, local nonprofits with which George School community members have long been involved.

Students Recognized at Model United Nations Conference

On a snowy long weekend in January, thirty-eight George School students and two faculty advisors joined 2,200 others from around the world at the Ivy League Model United Nations (ILMUN) Conference at University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Four days and countless committees later, the students returned happy with their performance, with three students—Arne Nelson ’13, Dan Simon ’13, and Sabrina Verleysen ’14—receiving verbal commendations at the closing ceremonies.

The George School boys' and girls' track teams braved the elements and boarded a bus to attend a Quad indoor track meet hosted by The Hill School held at Ursinus College on Wednesday, January 12, 2011. The results were worth the extra effort. The girls’ team broke three indoor school records and also qualified our first athlete of the season to states.
