Getting Ready for the Indoor Track Season

Issued: Monday, November 14, 2011

Winter track and field athletes are looking forward to the upcoming season and training on the brand new 400 meter all-weather track and field here at George School, including the state-of-the-art dual long and triple jump pits, shot put throwing area, and vertical jumping areas.

The varsity girls’ winter track team opens their season with several returning members of the 4x400 meter relay team that qualified for state championships last season. In the sprints, the team is led by Chrissy Haney ’12 and Emily Mapelli ’12. In addition both will run the open 400 meter run, plus their other individual events—Chrissy in the 55/60 hurdles and Emily in the high jump. In the distance races, it will be Priscilla Wiggins ’12 leading the way with Grace Prial ’13 also in the mix.

“The Lady Cougars may be strong this season in the distance medley relay which consists of four legs of varying lengths—1,200 meter, 400 meter, 800 meter, and 1,600 meter,” said head coach Stephen Moyer ’82. “With Priscilla’s incredible 1600 meter anchor capabilities (she has run state qualifying times in the 1,600-meter race for two consecutive years), and Emily and Chrissy in the middle legs (400 and 800 respectively), the missing piece may very well be Gracie Prial ’13 for the opening 1,200 leg.”

The boys Indoor track team is looking to turns some heads this season. In the 800 meter run Alex Atwater ’13, who holds the George School record in the indoor 800 meter run at 2:18.56, is looking to break under 2:10 and perhaps even take a shot at the Meet of Champions auto-qualifying time of 2:04.80. Zander Giuffrida ’12 is working to break the indoor school record for the mile, set by Chris Bergen ’08 at 4:43.14. He also has his sights on the school record set by Lex Darby ’11 at 10:50.15 in the 3,000-meter race.

This season, the girls’ team will compete in the Delaware Valley Girls Track Coaches Association (DVGTCA) league, while the boys will compete in the Track & Field Coaches Association of Greater Philadelphia (TFCAofGP) league. Both leagues compete on 200-meter indoor tracks located at various area high schools, colleges, and universities including Glen Mills High School, Haverford College, Ursinus College, Swarthmore College, and Lehigh University. Both the girls’ and boys’ teams will also compete in regional invitational meets at Lawrenceville School and Yale University.

In addition, the teams will try to qualify to compete at the State Championships to be held at Penn State University in February 2012 and National Championships in New York in March 2012. Last year, we qualified in the one mile run for the second year in a row, and the 4x400 meter relay for the first time in school history.
