English Department
Joined George School in 1979

“I don’t believe an English teacher should be a “middle man” between literature and the reader. I try to promote the idea that students own the books as much as I do.”

Why do you like teaching at George School?

George School students have a creative energy, a sense of purpose, and a sense of humor that make them an absolute pleasure to teach. They don’t pose and they don’t compete with one another in the classroom.

As a result, discussions can be wonderfully dynamic, filled with revelations for me no less than for them. Every year I meet students unlike any I’ve ever taught, hear insights I’ve never heard before, and read essays that surprise me intellectually.

Even after teaching at George School for thirty years, I’m never bored.
