“There is a time for work and a time for play, and at George School they often go hand in hand.”
What makes for a most interesting class or teacher?
As we take our seats for another math class, Paul Machemer takes his position at the front. “It’s a great day, and you’re confused,” he says, in what has become one of his catchphrases. Truth is in his voice as I, very confused after last night’s homework, raise my hand to ask a question.
As he writes the beast of a problem on the board, he lets out a familiar cackle that lets the class know that this is a tough one. He tears through the equations, a flurry of chalk dust and insight, and, as if by telepathy, spots where I went wrong. “Don’t do dat!” he says, words I’ll remember the next time I tackle a similar problem.
