The Barbara Dodd Anderson Trust

The Anderson Trust is in the form of a charitable annuity lead trust. This trust is a twenty-year irrevocable trust. At the end of the twenty years, the principal will revert to the family. One-third of the trust is composed of Berkshire Hathaway stock. The rest is composed of diversified investments.

What is the payout schedule?

The school will begin receiving quarterly payments starting September 30, 2007. This trust is designed with a yearly distribution that is a specified amount. George School will receive $5 million per year for 15 years and then $10,711,000 per year for the last 5 years, totaling $128,555,000.

What are the donor’s hopes for the gift?

It is Barbara’s express wish that the money be used to enhance the core qualities that distinguish George School:

1. A set of core values that are rooted in the Quaker tradition
2. The strength of the community
3. The variety of students from all over the world and from all walks of life who come here to live and learn together
4. Teachers who both inspire and care about their students

Do we know how the trust will be used?

Based on discussions with the donor, and with the approval of the GSC, in each of the next two years we will designate roughly $2 million of the $5 million annual amount to endowment for faculty/staff compensation. An additional $2 million will be designated each year to endowment for student financial aid. The income from those funds will feed into the operating budget in those areas.

Of the remaining $1 million, $100,000 will go directly into the Annual Fund each year. The remainder will be designated for sustainability and other projects, or added to the endowment.

Compensation, financial aid, and sustainability are current goals of the school and longstanding interests of the donor. Over the next year or two, we will engage in an inclusive strategic planning process that will guide decisions about how to designate the future funds from the Anderson Trust in such a way that they will support strategic, missionoriented goals of the school. The donor looks forward to being involved with us in that planning.
