Volunteering

Opportunities for parent involvement abound and are broad-ranged, running the gamut from such activities as organizing many of the Opening Days activities, providing baked goods for student events, arranging for birthday cakes, or delivering comfort food to a sick student in the Student Health Center, to serving as a representative on a number of committees such as the Diversity Steering or School committees.

Birthday Cake Committee
This volunteer takes mail orders from boarding families for birthday cakes. He/she places orders with a bakery and arranges for cakes to be delivered to students. The volunteer also buys birthday cards.

Bookstore Committee
Volunteers are needed to help out in the bookstore weekly for a half day (2½ to 3 hours), either in the morning or afternoon. Volunteers need to make at least a one half-day commitment per week for one term.

Career Workshops Committee
Committee members plan and arrange speakers for the annual career day workshops. Members recruit several volunteers from various professional backgrounds to make presentations to small groups of students.

Chaperone List (Odie LeFever, liaison)
Parents who offer to be on the chaperone list are contacted if the school needs adult chaperones for a school-sponsored service project or a school-sponsored one-day trip to local art museums, exhibits, or performances.

Clerical Assistance Committee
Committee chairs recruit volunteers to assist with mailings and other clerical tasks throughout the year. Volunteers are usually scheduled to come in on Fridays and are welcome to attend the assembly program at 9:45 a.m.

Commencement Flowers
Committee members arrange flowers for commencement activities. The committee chair purchases some flowers, urges parents to donate from their gardens, and gathers parents to prepare flower arrangements.

Cookie Drop Committee
At the end of each term volunteers make three to four dozen homemade sugar or chocolate chip cookies for distribution to boarders. The cookie drop usually takes place the Thursday before study weekend.

Drug and Alcohol Committee (Stephanie McBride, liaison)
Two parent representatives attend about four Drug and Alcohol Committee meetings a year. The committee reviews drug/alcohol issues, recommends policy, and assists in coordinating additional educational programs. Selection to this committee is by application only. Please send your credentials so we may select a person whose background is most appropriate for this position. Applications for these positions will be reviewed annually.

Halloween/Valentines Candy Committee
Volunteers purchase candies, bag them, and deliver them to campus mailboxes twice a year.

Health Center Volunteers (Lisa Meyer or Indira Rodrigo, liaison)
The Student Health Center needs parents to drive boarding students to routine doctor appointments during the day. They also need parents to deliver soup, cards, etc. to students who are in the infirmary for a couple of days.

Holiday Dance Baking Committee
Volunteers are requested to bake cookies, cupcakes, and brownies for the December Holiday Dance.

Hosting International Students (Rachel Fumia, liaison)
Parents volunteer to host or recruit other hosts for international boarding students during school breaks if the students cannot make it home during those times.

Lasagna Dinner Committee
Parents bake lasagnas for the students, faculty, and staff who attend this special dinner.

Learning Center Volunteers (Dave Young, liaison)
The Learning Center volunteers help the Academic Support Coordinator with clerical tasks. Parents work for an hour or two at a time. They can sign up to volunteer once a week, once a month, or once a term.

Opening Days Committee
Parents and students greet, direct, and assist new parents and students as they register during Saturday of Opening Days in September.

Parent Mentors
These parents will contact incoming parents in June, July, and August to make them feel welcome and answer any questions they might have. The relationship will be based mostly upon phone or email contact.

Safe Ride Volunteers (Lisa Meyer or Indira Rodrigo, liaison)
Parents volunteer to be called by the Student Health Center (SHC) when a student notifies the SHC that they wish to be brought back to campus if they are in a situation that makes them uneasy.
