Co-op Program Begins

Work in food service, known as “shift” to generations of George School students, is originally assigned to scholarship students. However, a student-originated egalitarian revolution in 1942–1943 initiates an innovative cooperative work program to which all students contribute. The co-op program continues today, with students taking on jobs from helping in school offices to cleaning classrooms. Shift, never the most popular assignment, is now part of the first-year course Essentials of a Friends Community, teaching students about Quaker education while they do the dishes.
