Ryan Tufford ’20

Chesterfield, New JerseyCatholic University of America
Ryan discovered that George School arts classes can provide both varied design skills and a good laugh.

Is there a class that made a big impact on you?

My arts classes (painting and drawing, woodworking, and graphic design) have allowed me to express my creativity and to focus on my interests. I am looking to study architecture in college.

In particular, my woodworking teacher, Carter Sio, has mastered not only the art of woodworking, but the perfect balance of keeping his students on task while having a fantastic sense of humor. His guidance has put me on the right track for the future.

What lessons have you learned on a team?

On the varsity lacrosse team, I learned the value of relationships. Playing attack, I had to have chemistry with my teammates on offense. We built that by spending time together after practice, shooting on goal and working on passing, and we learned to trust each other on and off the field. In games, we were able to get more creative, because we knew that we would be there for each other for the mistakes as well as the goals.

What do you like to do outside of the classroom?

I lead the Spikeball Club with my roommate. We started the club junior year. Spikeball is a fun backyard game. For club meetings each week, about 25 people show up and we play for an hour. We also host tournaments. It is a great way to meet new people and make new friends.
