Quakers believe the light of God is in everyone. It’s a simply stated idea. But the impact that idea has on how Quakers treat others is intricate and profound. We feel compelled not just to respect others, but to treat each person in a way that honors that spark of God within them.
Moving beyond respect demands more than lip service. It requires introspection, maybe even self scrutiny. Are we doing all we can to contribute to peace and equality, to ease suffering, to bring joy? Honoring the Light in each person is both a burden and a prize. But we believe a deep and binding respect is everyone’s birthright.
