Have a great idea? Great! Independent service learning projects give you the chance to imagine your service work. Not surprisingly, there are certain guidelines you must meet.
For example, students are required to interact directly with the population whom they are serving. In this fashion, a proposal to “fundraise” in order to make a donation to a specific charity would not be considered. Students are encouraged to meet with the Director of Community Service for suggestions or to discuss their ideas. All projects must be preapproved by the Religions Department and need to be submitted at least three weeks prior to the anticipated start date or no later than mid-May for summer projects.
Past independent projects have included working with Head Start, volunteering at a shelter for battered women, working in client care in hospitals, and building community gardens in Trenton. The only thing needed is a little imagination and the responsibility to follow through.
