Cougars Deliver Historic Weekend

From Franklin Field to the final strides and throws on campus, George School track and field athletes put together one of the program’s most impressive four‑day stretches of the season, beginning Thursday, April  23 at the Penn Relays and concluding Sunday, April 26 at the GS Decathlon and Heptathlon. George School left its mark across record boards and all‑time performance lists.

The Penn Relays

The weekend opened on Thursday with the girls taking center stage at the Penn Relays, where the 4x100‑meter relay team of Lorna Brackenridge ’27, Chisom Achebe ’27, Leannah Afzal ’26, and Ava Ramseur ’28 showed poise on one of the sport’s biggest stages. The quartet powered home in 52.32 seconds, a performance that now ranks fifth all‑time in George School history and set the tone for what would become a historic weekend.

Girl runners with coach

As the meet rolled into Friday and Saturday, it was the boys’ turn to shine, and they did not disappoint. In the boys 4x100‑meter relay, Samuel Pereira‑Kiernan ’28, Pearce Quinn ’27, Stephan Noel ’26, and Jackson Ellis ’26 delivered a race to remember, sprinting down the final straightaway in 43.86 seconds to establish a new school record.

George School’s depth continued to show later in the meet when the boys 4x400‑meter relay took to the track. Deagan Hopkins ’28, Stephan Noel ’26, Keshav Kanubaddi ’29, and Danny Rodriguez ’27 combined for a strong run of 3:42.78, earning the tenth‑fastest time in school history.

GS Decathlon and Heptathlon

While the Penn Relays wrapped up in Philadelphia, the focus shifted back to campus for the two‑day GS Decathlon and Heptathlon, where endurance, versatility, and consistency took center stage.

In the girls heptathlon, the Cougars once again filled the results sheet. Anne‑Catherine de Ghellinck d’Elseghem ’26 led the way with a second‑place finish, scoring 2,694 points to earn the fifth‑best total in school history. Teammates Ayda Clifton ’29 and Sophia Ogundele ’29 followed with sixth‑ and seventh‑place finishes, respectively, with both performances ranking among the top ten all‑time at George School.

Sunday’s final events provided one last highlight in the boys decathlon. Ben Ferrenz ’26 capped his weekend with a commanding first‑place finish, totaling 5,829 points to set a new school record. Ferrenz eclipsed the previous mark by 628 points, delivering one of the most dominant individual performances in program history. Daniel Piscitelli‑Cruz ’26 added to the Cougars’ success with a sixth‑place finish and the fifth‑highest decathlon score all‑time at George School.

What's Next? The Friends Schools League (FSL) Championships

With the Friends Schools League Championships approaching on Wednesday, May 6, the weekend’s performances served as both a milestone and a measuring stick.

“As we are about to compete in the FSL Championships, we are poised to do well,” said George School Head Track and Field Coach Mike Q. Bailey. “Both teams have a chance at the league championships.”
