Raising Their Voices: Senior Speeches at GS

Last term, English 12 seniors stepped into the spotlight, delivering their Senior Speeches — a transformative project designed to challenge them to reflect deeply and speak with purpose. Each student, standing before their peers, was asked to explore the heart of who they are and share their insights.

As part of their study of the novel Independence, the class delved into powerful themes of self-discovery, personal conviction, and the courage to speak out. Senior Speech prompts encourage students to examine their passions, values, and the causes that matter most to them. Their speeches answer these simple yet profound questions:

“What lights your fire?”
“For what are you willing to raise your voice?”

"I’m so proud of my English 12 students who really lean into this exercise," shared teacher Edna Valdepeñas. "It’s more than just an assignment. It’s an opportunity for them to engage on a personal level with the literature in addition to delivering a formal speech."

My students are so inspiring and I hope they are proud of their accomplishments." -Edna Valdepeñas

The Senior Speech project is about more than just literary reflection. It’s a stepping stone toward the professional world — a place where the ability to communicate ideas with clarity and confidence is indispensable.

"Crafting and delivering a compelling speech strengthens students' ability to communicate ideas, think on their feet, and present themselves confidently — skills invaluable in college, careers, and leadership roles," said English Department Head Melaina Young '93.

Each speech is a powerful reminder for students that their voices matter and the world is waiting to hear what they have to say.
