A Bigger Toy Box
A Bigger Toy Box

Kyle Okraku '26 has been a member of the George School Student Activities Board (SAB) since his freshman year. The group — now 13 students strong — brainstorms, plans and executes weekend activities for day and boarding students.

The SAB aims to recruit students who are invested “in bettering the school,” said Kyle. And as one of its leaders, he’s excited to shake up the activities playbook with some new events.

I want to be part of the conversations that shape the school. I’ve always been interested in curating the community aspect of any place I am.” -Kyle Okraku '26

But he wants to be very clear: While he may be an SAB leader, he does not consider himself in charge.

“We definitely want bigger changes,” he said. “And I’m speaking as ‘we’ here, because it’s not just the leaders and (Director of Student Activities) Starrchild Jackson directing everything; it’s a community-collaborative effort.”

Starrchild co-signs on that statement, and is eager to use his position to be an advocate for the students as they head into new territory.

“I am the SAB’s facilitator, but it’s their ideas,” he said. After he equipped the students with the logistical and organizational tools they needed to strategize well and stay on course, “now, they can run it. Kyle is great, and had a lot of ideas I didn’t even think of."

“So I challenge him and the group with, ‘What’s something new? As long as it’s within budget, let’s have some fun with it. If it doesn’t work out, then it doesn’t, but we tried.’ I take a backseat to what SAB wants.”

Thanks to the Fund for Student Activities and the generosity of others in the George School community, Kyle, Starrchild and the SAB are able to dial up their dreams — tempered with smart strategy.

“I’ve worked in underserved communities, so I’m used to working with shoestring budgets, and I know how to make them last,” said Starrchild. “I think the gift challenges us to be strategic and rise to the occasion.”

“It’s like giving the school a bigger toy box to play with,” said Kyle. “There are so many more resources to say ‘yes’ to ideas that we didn’t think could happen. It’s allowing us to plan bigger and more exciting adventures. It’s really magical.”
