Nobel Laureate Mario Capecchi ’56 Returns to George School

Nobel Laureate Mario Capecchi ’56 P. ’02, returned to campus to speak to students, faculty, alumni and parents during Alumni Weekend, May 1-4, 2026. Mario is best known for his pioneering work on the development of gene targeting in mouse embryo-derived stem cells.


This technology allows scientists to create mutations in any desired gene, giving them virtually complete freedom to manipulate DNA sequences in the genome of living mice. Mario’s innovative research sheds light on the possibility of a physiological basis — hardwired into the genetic code — for numerous psychiatric disorders including obsessive-compulsive disorder, depression and schizophrenia.

His work in this area revolutionized the study of mammalian biology and is used by scientists worldwide to understand countless diseases. In 2007, he was recognized for this achievement with the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. He finds great value in motivating students to persevere in their scientific studies and careers.

The Science Department was excited to welcome Mario into several classes, where he inspired students with his insights and enthusiasm.

“Mario was friendly and informative,” shared Science Faculty Brian Patton. “He seamlessly adjusted his discussion to match any level of understanding.”

Science Faculty Pacho Gutiérrez ’77 said Mario’s persistence in science resonated with both him and the students. “Mario encouraged our students not to give up on a line of inquiry, even in the face of skepticism. He emphasized trusting your instincts and continuing to pursue ideas you believe in.”

Head of the Science Department Pascal Lanciano added, “Mario didn’t just share his career with our students — he shared his spirit. He showed that a life in science is a marathon fueled by wonder. By blending approachability with deep insight, he left us with a roadmap for success: stay curious, build confidence through knowledge and always enjoy the ride.”

IB Coordinator Kim McGlynn also shared her enthusiasm for Mario’s visit, noting the significance of his return during George School’s 40th anniversary of the IB Program, where he addressed students and community members.

“Although Mario graduated before the IB Program was established at George School, he embodied many IB Learner Profile traits, especially as an inquirer,” Kim said. “He spoke movingly about his enthusiasm for ‘starting from the bottom’ in a subject or area of study, demonstrating the curiosity and humility that have guided him since a young age. In doing so, he affirmed the value of learning as a lifelong journey and reinforced the Quaker principle of ‘continuing revelation.’”

Mario’s advice to students?

“Look for the simple solution first. If that doesn't work, keep exploring. No matter what you're doing, until you do it, you don't know if it's possible.”

He also spoke about the importance of scientists being willing to accept a certain amount of risk in their work.

“You must choose risk wisely to justify the 'why'. You need that ability to take risks – to be able to pursue what you're going to do and to think about what you want to do. That's the whole process: you always continue saying ‘why,'" he shared. " I don't think there are any questions that aren't approachable; they may just not be approachable today.” 

Reflecting on the nature of science, Mario emphasized its constant evolution and the importance of curiosity and exploration.

“Science will always progress, it's never static. It's always changing as new technology comes in. You must venture outside your comfort zone and see new things – that's what science is all about. The feeling you get of seeing something that no one ever saw before is enormous. The brain is a very complicated machine. Knowledge is infinite and that is fantastic.”

Turning to his own experience, Mario also spoke about the impact of George School and the value of collaboration and perspective in scientific discovery.

George School gave me the opportunity to try science. The diversity here opens students up to different experiences. Answers don't come from any individuals, but instead from different viewpoints talking about it and coming to a solution together. Nothing clicks without effort or love. Biology is sacred and we should treat it that way.”

Through his words and presence, Mario reminded students that science is not just about discovery — but about curiosity, courage and a lifelong passion for learning.

A distinguished professor of human genetics and biology, Mario belongs to the National Academy of Sciences, the European Academy of Sciences, and the National Academy of Medicine. He received the 2007 Nobel Laureate in Physiology or Medicine. He holds a Bachelor of Science in chemistry and physics, and a doctorate in biophysics. Mario received the Alumni Award from George School in 2001, shared his research at TEDxGeorgeSchool in December 2016 and has since often visited George School science classes to lecture.
