The Cougar Classic: Giving Back for the Next Generation
The Cougar Classic: Giving Back for the Next Generation

Nearly 20 years ago, a small group of George School teachers and alumni grabbed their clubs and headed out for a casual round of golf. At the time, the Cougar Classic was little more than an informal tournament between old friends. Among them was Bradd Forstein ’93.

With the support of his wife Randee and current Athletic Director Kurt Ruch, Bradd has helped shape the Cougar Classic into a community-wide celebration that brings together families and friends of George School. But for the Forsteins, it’s never  been just about golf — it’s about giving back to the students.

As an alumnus, Bradd knows firsthand how transformative athletics can be for students. Before arriving at George School, he struggled to find a place on a team at his local public school. “At George School, I was required to be on a team,” he said. “That was huge for me — just being on a team, meeting new friends and contributing in a positive way. Being able to play sports at the high school level was not something I thought would ever be an option for me.”

The lessons Bradd learned as an athlete have stayed with him for life. “Some of the most memorable experiences of my life came from being on the athletic field and from my relationships with coaches,” he said. “I think about those experiences almost every day.”

Randee sees that impact too. “So much of learning happens beyond the classroom,” she said. “A lot of Bradd’s connections with peers were built on the athletic field, on a bus ride or at practice. These are the kinds of moments that help shape who you become."

Engagement in Athletics at George School is incredibly strong; whether they are emerging athletes or skilled competitors, our students participate as rigorously on the field and court as they do in the classroom.

That’s why the Forsteins are so committed to making sure every George School student has the chance to participate in sports, regardless of background or financial barriers.

“My hope is that athletics remains accessible to anyone who wants to try a sport,” Bradd said. “Whether it’s from a pair of running shoes to having the right equipment to do crew — whatever the pursuit is — we hope some of this money raised will lower the barriers to entry.”

Year after year, the Cougar Classic provides resources that allow George School students to join teams, try new sports and grow through athletics. For Bradd and Randee, that’s the true reward.
