Cross country rarely unfolds exactly as planned. At the Mill Street Run in Bristol, Pa., George School's runners demonstrated perseverance and composure, overcoming unexpected challenges while delivering strong performances.

The boys team earned second- and eighth-place individual finishes and placed sixth in the team standings against a competitive field.

Senior Owen Burgess appeared to be on pace for an individual victory before an unexpected wrong turn took him off course for several meters. Despite the setback, Burgess quickly regained his focus and finished second overall in a personal-record time of 16:03.53.

Another remarkable performance came from Asher Schmidt '29. Moments before the race began, Schmidt realized he had forgotten to attach his bib number. As runners stood on the starting line receiving final instructions, he sprinted several blocks to retrieve it and returned just in time for the start. Carrying the bib in his hand for the entire race, Schmidt went on to finish eighth overall.

"It will probably go down as the most improbable top-10 cross country finish in my coaching tenure," said head coach Mike Sherman. "It was not only a study in how much you want to race, but what people can do when the pressure is turned to its fullest."

A young girls team showed encouraging progress. With many athletes new to the program this season, their commitment to summer training translated to strong performances and growing confidence.

Freshman Adriana Kowalska led the Cougars with a time of 22:28.25, followed by Praasa Palakollu '29 in 23:25.92. Competing against a field made up largely of bigger public and parochial schools, the girls finished seventh out of 11 teams.

The team's depth was equally encouraging, as Daphne Simkins '29, Tia Al-Haddadin '29, Ayda Clifton '29, and Sabrina Yoder '30 each set a season personal record.
