An Invitation to Independent Schools
An Invitation to Independent Schools

In this article, Associate Director for Multicultural Recruitment at George School Bez Wallace offers advice about the admission process and what to look for when researching independent schools.

It's a privilege as the Associate Director for Multicultural Recruitment at George School to aid students who want to pursue their education at independent schools to find their home. Independent schools offer ample opportunities, and it can be difficult to know which school is the right fit. Start by considering what factors are most important to you and your family. Are you focused on a certain sport? IB programs? The arts? Are you looking for a boarding or day student experience?

Getting Started

Not sure where to start? A school fair can be a great way to begin the conversation with a number of schools and make an initial connection. Attending Open Houses, spring events, and revisit days are a great way to engage in the process and figure out what you are drawn to.

Consider the Outcomes

Outcomes are always a major consideration for families. Why is the investment of private education at the high school level valuable? At George School, we have six dedicated college counselors on our team who are there for you every step of the way when planning for college and beyond. Small class sizes, individualized support, and leadership opportunities also grant unique opportunities to grow and develop as a teenager, making the investment invaluable for one’s future self.

Access and Flexibility

Independent schools grant you the access and flexibility to prioritize your childs’ needs and interests – giving students a voice in a vital developmental stage so they can go on to be productive citizens of the world as their most authentic selves

The Application Process

Don’t let the application process intimidate you. This process is reciprocal – ensuring students are best fit to their learning environment. It’s about more than your transcript – we want to get to know the real you and what you can bring to our community.

If you can, visit and explore campus to see if the environment is the best fit for you. After you've sorted your list of schools that you feel serious about, go on campus tours and meet with students and faculty. Getting your feet on the ground is an advantage. Where do you want to plant yourself to grow?

Mission & Values

George School’s values and mission stay true to us throughout the admission process. Our goal is to be a community where people with vastly different backgrounds, identities, and perspectives thrive, are treated equitably, and are united in their mutual respect, and the pursuit of a common good. This belief is reflected in the school’s motto, “Mind the Light.” This process considers how we can support your child best along their academic journey, ensuring they are taken care of and have the resources they need.

Brighter Together

Our graduates have sharp minds, big hearts, and a global consciousness. They're humble and hard-working, independent and purpose-driven, seriously joyful and joyfully serious, and focused on making the world a little better every day.
