Foundations of Financial Aid

In this article, Director of Financial Aid Mike Murray addresses a series of common questions about tuition assistance and offers valuable insight and guidance about the FA application process for prospective families.

As Director of Financial Aid at George School, I am inspired by the opportunity to make a transformative education accessible to students from all backgrounds. Every family brings a unique story to George School and being a part of their journey here is incredibly rewarding.

Extraordinary Value

Planning for an investment in an independent school starts with recognizing the long-term value of education. George School not only offers a world-class curriculum but also impactful opportunities for personal growth, leadership, and community engagement. Families can prepare for this investment by budgeting, exploring tuition payment plans, and prioritizing independent school education over non-essential expenses. Students in our community develop relationships and skills that provide a foundation for success in college and beyond, making George School a lasting investment.

Process

Our financial aid process is designed to be both thorough and approachable. Families begin by completing and submitting an online application through Clarity. We carefully review each application to assess a family’s demonstrated need. George School uses standard methodologies to ensure fairness and consistency while also considering unique financial circumstances that may be tough to quantify. When a student is accepted to George School, they will also receive any need-based grants the family has qualified for as well as limited merit scholarships if selected by the Admission Committee.

Support

The tremendous impact that our alumni have through the lens of financial aid is inspiring. Every year, their generous support empowers students with diverse perspectives, talents, and contributions here at George School. To me, this shows the impact of a George School education — one that stays with you throughout the rest of your life, with a desire to give back to the next generation.

Transparency and thoroughness are critical to the financial aid process at George School.

Availability

The biggest misconception is that financial aid is only available to families with very limited incomes. In reality, our goal is to help a wide range of families bridge the gap between tuition and what they can reasonably afford. Families should be transparent about their income, assets, family size and any unique financial circumstances. Independent high schools often look at the family’s ability to contribute within the context of a smaller, mission-driven community.

Take Action

My biggest recommendation is to start the conversation early and to be open about your financial concerns. This will ensure your student is set up for success and can accurately manage your expectations. At George School, families never have to pay back their need-based grants.

Explore Options

Our financial aid process is designed to meet families where they are and to help close the gap between what they can afford and the cost of tuition. I encourage families to explore all options, ask questions, and not to hesitate to be in touch if they need any assistance throughout the application process.
