College Planning & Important Dates

Over a student's four years at George School, they will attend a series of workshops and seminars that will help them navigate all the components of the college application process–from completing the application and writing essays to developing test-taking strategies and applying for scholarships and financial aid.

George School’s College Counseling program begins informally in a student’s first year, when students are encouraged to build a strong academic foundation while exploring the wide range of clubs and co-curricular opportunities on campus.

The College Counseling team helps tenth grade students in their curriculum planning.

In tenth grade, students begin to consider college options and attend the college fair hosted by George School in addition to seminars and workshops.

Winter

• Sophomore class meeting with College Counseling team to preview college process and tools, discuss how to maximize experience at George School through authentic engagement and learning opportunities.
   
• One-on-one meetings with a College Counselor to discuss course planning.
   
• Practice PSAT administered at George School.

Spring

• Informational sessions about Standardized Testing, Financial Aid, College Athletic Recruitment, HBCUs, and more.
   
• Attend George School's annual Unbranded College Fair.

As students move into eleventh grade, they begin one-on-one meetings with their College Counselor, participate in seminars and workshops, attend George School's annual college fair to expand their list of colleges that match their interests, and begin their college essay writing.

Fall

• Junior class meeting to discuss what to expect, helpful tools, and expectations.
   
• PSAT administered at George School.
   
• Informational session about Standardized Testing.
   
• College Planning presentations for juniors and their parents/guardians.
   
• College representatives visit George School to meet with juniors and seniors.

Winter

• Students assigned to their College Counselor (December).
   
• Student and family meetings with College Counselor begin.
   
• College Counseling Seminar Series (February).

Spring

• One-on-one meetings with College Counselor continue.
   
• College Counseling Seminar Series (April).
   
• College Essay and College Interview Workshops.
   
• Informational sessions about Financial Aid, Visual & Performing Arts, College Athletic Recruitment, HBCUs, and more.
   
• Workshop series on standardized test preparation.
   
• SAT administered at George School.
   
• Attend George School's annual Unbranded College Fair.
   
• Pre-summer check-out meeting with College Counselor to set goals for the summer and prepare for the application phase.

By their senior year, students are well prepared. Their College Counselor reviews their list of colleges and universities with them, checks over their entire application, and helps them through the last few hurdles of the college process.

Applying for financial aid or looking for an athletic or other special scholarship? Your counselor can help there too.

Fall

• One-on-one meetings with College Counselor continue in lead-up to application deadlines: review applications and essays, and refine college list.
   
• Senior Night with College Counseling (required for seniors, parents/guardians encouraged to attend).
   
• SAT administered at George School.
   
• Workshops on FAFSA and paying for college.
   
• Students submit college applications.
   
• College representatives visit George School to meet with juniors and seniors.

Winter

• One-on-one meetings with college counselor continue.

Spring

• Final admissions decisions arrive — Financial aid and admissions discernment.
   
• National College Enrollment Deposit Day (May 1).
   
• College Celebration Day!
