Caring is one of the 10 IB Learner Profile attributes. The other 9 attributes are: inquirer, knowledgeable, thinker, communicator, principled, open-minded, risk-taker, balanced, and reflective. These traits are encouraged and developed in all IB Diploma Program (IBDP) students throughout the program and are, in fact, aspirational qualities for all individuals. Caring, in particular, is central to the Friends mission and so it’s little wonder that Junior IBDP students found volunteering for Cardz for Kidz to be a meaningful exercise.
In the first year of the IB Diploma Program (IBDP), juniors are introduced to IB philosophy, requirements, and concepts through their work in the IB Core: Inquiry course. Taken in the first term, this one-mod class not only establishes a basic foundation for student skills and work expectations in the program but also supports students as they begin work on the three required IBDP core components—the Extended Essay (EE), Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS), and Theory of Knowledge (TOK)—all of which “aim to broaden students’ educational experience and challenge them to apply their knowledge and skills.”
With so many interests and extracurricular opportunities, GS students easily fulfill the IB Core requirement for Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) work. This term, students in the IB Core: Inquiry course have completed experiences in the Creativity, Activity, and Service strands. What strand will IBDP students choose next?
Regardless, CAS work demonstrates the caring nature of George School students. As Kim McGlynn (IB Coordinator) always says, “GS = CAS!”
