IB Program This Week

WEEK OF FEBRUARY 2

“Meetings should have as few people as possible, but all the right people.”

(Charles W. Scharf, American CEO of Wells Fargo)

Both Junior and Senior IB Diploma Program (IBDP) cohorts meet on a monthly basis to review IB requirements and guidelines and to discuss policy. Yet, these gatherings also provide a great opportunity to check in with each cohort and for IBDP students to bond with their peers and support each other.

And we always engage in certain IBDP meeting traditions. Share an IB “success”—completion of an Internal Assessment (IA), a good grade on a test, fun with a CAS experience—and you’ll get thrown a mandarin. Make it to the meeting and you’ve made it to yet another milestone for IB. Eat a home baked chocolate chip cookie from Kim McGlynn (IB Coordinator)! Or grab some other snacks—chips, Capri Sun, a soda.

Most of all, these meetings are a time to support, encourage, and cheer each other on. Shoutouts are necessary. At each meeting, individual students are recognized for their efforts and their diligence in submitting IB Core assessments by the deadlines. Caring is one of the IB Learner Profile traits, and it’s a trait we both encourage and strive to model throughout the program by fostering respect for others and a nurturing community, even the small community of our IBDP cohort meetings.

The 10 IB Learner Profile attributes are: inquirer, communicator, knowledgeable, thinker, principled, open-minded, caring, risk-taker, balanced, and reflective. These traits are encouraged and developed in all IB Diploma Program (IBDP) students throughout the program.

IB Highlights

Carly Wassel (EE Coordinator) is proud of the Junior IBDP Class of 2027 for their hard work on the IB Extended Essay (EE)! Students who submitted timely 5-page drafts of their EE earned small prizes--mini toy cars--and were celebrated for their hard work as they move ahead with this major IB assessment.  "Vroom vroom!"

Interested in IB? Current IBDP students joined Kim McGlynn (IB Coordinator) for an open IB office hours session to answer questions about IB and to offer helpful and honest guidance about program requirements, guidelines, challenges, and benefits.

Mia Woodruff ('26) knit this beautiful blanket as part of her Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) portfolio, demonstrating her impressive work in the Creativity strand. Moreover, Mia's work also attests to the IB Learner Profile of caring for others to "make a positive difference in the lives of others and the world around us" as she gifted this blanket to Michael Qualiano, her College Counselor, for his newborn daughter!

Beautifully designed by IB Visual Arts student Alina Pang (’26), this year’s IBDP t-shirts allude to many of the phrases students repeat throughout the program, such as “GS = CAS,” and offers an homage to the IB Learner Profile traits that this cohort—the “biggest cohort”—best embodies.

Alina explained her thought process, noting, “I designed the T-shirt to capture the feeling and experience of being in the IB program. It’s often challenging, chaotic, but also surprisingly caring and inspiring. I hope it brings a little humor and a shared memory for everyone who’s been through it together.”
