The Learning Center

Every student learns differently, and at George School we meet every student where they are–respecting that no two students are the same.

The Learning Center is a positive and supportive environment that builds on students’ strengths and helps them develop strategies and skills needed to shine their brightest.

The Learning Center offers a wide range of services that support each student’s ability to achieve academic success including: individualized support for homework, subject specific support, test taking strategies, and executive functioning skills support, such as note taking, studying, time management, and organization.

Recognizing the differences in each learner, we strive to create an inclusive environment where personalized learning thrives and all students are welcome.

New Student Seminar

New Student Seminar is designed to support incoming students with the supports needed to transition to life as a George School student. Students are guided through their studies with the help of faculty and staff. This seminar is designed to provide all new students guidance on how to make the most of their GS experience.

New Student Seminar: Success at GS!

Who: ALL new students in grades 9 and 10 (students will be provided details during Collection from their advisor).

What: A seminar where students will learn:

Tips to improve executive functioning skills (like time management, organization, planning, task initiation, and more).
Strategies for effective learning based on the latest brain research.
How to effectively manage social media and screen time.

When: During your first free arrangement (which will be in Term 1, 2 or 3).

Where: Students who have a free arrangement in Term 1 should report to the Fitness and Athletics Center (FAC) at the start of your free arrangement. Students who do not have a free arrangement in Term 1 will be scheduled in Term 2 or Term 3.

Waghorne Academic Study Hub (WASH)

George School is a residential community where everyone is always learning with each other and from one another. Students not only receive academic support from their teachers here, but also from their peers. In the Waghorne Academic Study Hub (WASH), free peer tutoring is available Monday through Thursday in the MDA Library during Study Hall.

The WASH is home to Math Help, the Writing Center, Language, and Science support. Students can visit the WASH and work with peer mentors and subject-specialist faculty. There are also faculty proctors available for organizational or course content assistance.

Private peer tutoring and adult tutoring are available to students as well. Contact the Director of Learning Center Services if you would like to arrange for a private peer or adult tutor.

Academic Accommodations

Does your student have a diagnosed learning difference and require special accommodations to support their learning? Not sure where to begin and need assistance with next steps? The Director of Learning Center Services can work with you and your family to create a Learning Difference Bulletin (LDB) and consult with teachers to implement the accommodations.

Please note: Evaluation documentation is required for eligibility. It is recommended for students to have documentation that is within three years of enrollment to assist George School in offering accommodations appropriate for high school. College Board, ACT, and the International Baccalaureate (IB) program also strongly suggest updated documentation within the same timeframe to support approval of accommodations.

Advisors

Advisors at George School provide students with personal attention and support whether it is talking through a challenge their advisee had in class, brainstorming a new club idea together, or attending their advisee's soccer game to cheer them on. Advisors help their advisees learn about life at George School, select courses, monitor academic progress, and are a friend students can turn to when they need it.

Advisors also serve as the primary academic liaison between George School and parents and guardians. Advisors are here to guide students every step of the way (and bring plenty of their favorite snacks to their weekly Collection meetings).
