Throughout his twenty-five years working in physical education, George School Athletic Director Kurt Ruch has seen the positive role athletics programs play in student growth and development. He focuses on developing students and helping them realize their goals, whether playing for prospective college teams or improving their skills in the present.

GS Athletics Makes History

Highlights from championship wins

Rowing | 2025

The women's rowing team took FIRST in the Philly City Championships in May 2025, marking the first Championship for the program. Both the novice men’s 4+ and the novice women’s 4+ advanced all the way to the finals and both took home silver medals!

Girls & Boys Swimming | 2025

🥇Record breakers and FSL CHAMPS 2025! Congratulations to the Girls Swimming Team on their second consecutive championship win and the Boys with their third! 

Spring Track & Field | 2025

Boys Track & Field won the Friends Schools League (FSL) Championship! The Girls Track & Field team took second place.There were five George School records, 27 all-time top ten appearances, and forty-one personal records set during the competition. Go Cougars!

Spring Track & Field | 2024

 

The George School Boys Varsity Track & Field team won the championship at this year’s Friends School League Championships. The team competed in all 18 events, amassing an impressive total of 161 points, outperforming Germantown Friends School (141.5 points) and Westtown School (95.5 points).

Not to be outdone, the George School Girls Varsity team also performed well. Competing in all 18 events, the girls accumulated 86 points, which earned them a commendable third place. Germantown Friends School led the girls’ standings with 140 points, closely followed by Friends’ Central with 132 points.

Congratulations to all athletes and the coaching staff, especially Head Coach Mike Bailey, for successfully leading the talented teams to success.

Volleyball | 2023

The George School Varsity Volleyball team won the Independent Volleyball League (IVL) Championship with a 3-1 victory over the Perkiomen School to claim their first league championship since 2003!

Boys & Girls Swimming | 2024

The Swim Teams’ dedication and hard work propelled them to individual successes and contributed significantly to the collective triumph in the Friends Schools League. For the first time since 2002, the Girls’ Varsity team secured the FSL Championship, ending Friends Central School’s twenty-one-year run. The team earned a record of 9-2, setting five new George School Varsity records.

The Boys’ Varsity team earned a record of 12-1 and set seven new George School records, winning their second consecutive FSL Championship by the largest margin in conference history. During the championship meet, George School Boys broke four school, pool, meet, and conference records in the 200 Medley Relay, 200 Freestyle, 100 Backstroke, and the 400 Free Relay, respectively.

Basketball | 2023

The Boys’ Varsity Basketball team became FSL Champions for the first time in school history. The final score of the game was 64-61. Christian Bliss ’24 set a new school record with 39 points vs. ANC Basketball in the FSL Championship Game. It broke the previous George School record set by teammate Kachi Nzeh ’23, who had 34 points vs. Trenton Catholic on January 31, 2022. The team went on to the PAIS Championship final, also for the first time in George School history, and lost in overtime by two points. 

Track | 2023

The Winter Track team won big at the Pennsylvania Independent Schools Athletic Association (PAISAA) State Championships, placing first in both the boys' and girls' divisions. It is the first time in school history that both the boys' and girls' teams have placed first in states together.

Cross Country | 2023

Margaret Massengill (Class of 2026) took first place in the 2023 FSL Cross Country Championship race. Time: 18:56.50; Distance: 3.1 mi.
 

Swimming | 2023

The boys’ varsity swim team broke three school records and placed first to take home the gold in the FSL Championship for the first time since 2000. Each swim broke the George School Boys’ Varsity Record, The Marshall-Platt Pool Record, The Friends Schools League Championship Meet Record, and the All-Time Friends School League Conference Record.

The girls' team placed a close second behind Friends’ Central School, scoring more points than last year, resulting in their highest total to date. Both the 200 Medley Relay and the 200 Free Relay were within one second of the George School Varsity Record.
