Ryan Tufford ’20 played a strong game in goal for George School, saving one of two penalty shots and making a few other excellent saves.  As a new team, just getting to know each other, GS has some things to work on but I was happy with our overall effort during the game. Next up for GS is a game at Peddie School on Friday.

The George School junior varsity boys soccer team beat Abington Friends School on Friday. Cornelius Durner was fouled just as he was shooting the ball and was awarded a penalty kick.  Cornelius took the PK and scored to put GS out in front 1-0.  Three minutes later David Osei-Tutu received a nice pass that put him one-on-one with his defender.  David used his skill and speed to turn it into a breakaway with only the goalie in his way of scoring. David calmly shot the ball into the net, 2-0 GS. At the fifteen minute mark, Cornelius got his second goal of the game when he found himself with the ball at his feet and the AFS goalie standing on the goal line.  He too calmly passed the ball into the corner of the net. The score remained 3-0 until halftime. Twelve minutes into the second half, Cornelius got a hat trick when he scored after using his speed to get past the AFS defense and put a nice shot by the AFS keeper. Eli Faigle, returning from injury and playing in his first game of the season, finished the scoring with a nice side angle shot that seemed to catch the AFS keeper by surprise. Overall, the team played well and controlled most of the possession throughout the game.

The boys played very well in the FSL JV Soccer Tournament on Saturday. George School won our group and took on a good Germantown Friends School team in the final. After falling behind GFS by two goals early in the game, GS fought back to tie the contest with goals by Cornelius Durner and David Osei-Tutu. The score was 2-2 with fifteen minutes to go. Unfortunately, it was GFS that converted on their remaining offensive opportunities so GS was forced to settle for second place in the tournament. The championship final score was GS 2 GFS 4.

The JV boys soccer team lost a tough one to Germantown Friends School on Tuesday, October 9. George School took the lead on a goal by Hari Narayanam in the early stages of the match. GFS came back to the tie the game 1-1 just before the half. The teams played an even second half until GFS found the net with just six minutes remaining in the game. GS then worked to equalize but GFS held on for the 2-1 win.

Due to three call-ups to our varsity team, the GS JV players worked in a new formation that worked well. Jacob Bright, normally a central midfielder, did an excellent job as our central defender yesterday. Danny McKay-Simons also had a very strong game while playing at both the right and left wing back positions during the contest. Ryan Tufford was solid in net, while Javi Vidal, Ryan Bencivengo, and Alex Amindji gave everything they had in the effort.

Today, we travel to Friends' Central School for another FSL game.

George School @ Friends’ Central School

Wednesday, October 10, 2018 @ 4:00 p.m.
Win 3-1

Kairo Morton opened the scoring for George School midway through the first half when he leaped and headed home a long throw-in by Alex Amindji. The score remained 1-0 GS until halftime. After the break, FCS got on the board after GS was unable to properly clear the ball from a dangerous area. Undeterred, GS continued to play hard. With twenty minutes to play, Ryan Bencivengo received a pass along the left offensive sideline, dribbled forward, and hit an outstanding cross that found Cornelius Durner at the FCS six-yard line. Cornelius tucked the ball in the net to give GS a 2-1 lead. Twelve minutes later, Cornelius secured the win by scoring again on a shot from twenty yards out.

Ryan Tufford played a strong game in net for GS. Defensively, Alex Amindji, Javi Vidal, Ryan Bencivengo, Akindele Oladeji, Danny McKay-Simons, and Sebi Vinhais all worked tremendously hard to put GS in position to win the game.

Next up for the team is another FSL game vs Moorestown Friends School on Friday.

George School @ Westtown School

Tuesday, October 16, 2018 @ 4:00 p.m.
Win 3-2

George School traveled to Westtown for a "Moose Point" match on Tuesday. After falling behind by the score of 0-2 at halftime, the Cougars attacked the second half with determination. Twelve minutes into the second half GS cut the lead to 1-2 when Jason Charles converted a penalty kick after Javi Vidal was tripped in the box. A few minutes later, Cornelius Durner scored to even the game at two. Five minutes after that, Cornelius found himself in alone with the Westtown goalie due to a pass from Jacob Bright that opened up the Westtown D. Cornelius put the ball in the back of the net for the 3-2 lead.

Westtown then applied pressure and almost tied the game off of a corner kick, but Javi Vidal cleared the danger by heading the WT effort off of the GS goal line.

Congratulations to the entire team for bringing the "Moose Point" back to George School.

George School vs Shipley School

Win 3-2

The boys finished the season with a 3-2 win over Shipley School.  It was the fourth consecutive Friends Schools League win for the team and pushed our league record to 5-1-1.  After a slow start as players got to know each other, the team really picked up their level of play during the second half of the season.  At one point, our overall record was 1-4-1 so to finish the season at 6-5-1 was satisfying because everyone could see the improvement.
