“I challenge our athletes to exceed their expectations for themselves. The philosophy is a teaching one: I enjoy watching our athletes exceed everyone’s expectations; getting them to strive for the A-grade in class and in athletics. I stress playing to perfection with the understanding that achieving perfection is impossible.”

“I coach because I see athletic participation as a laboratory course in life-skills. I submit that each of us has an inner reservoir of strength and resilience. Unfortunately, those of us who eschew participation in athletics do not get pushed to the point where we are forced to call upon those reserves. This regrettable circumstance has serious ramifications that go well beyond winning or losing games, matches, or even jobs. Without the first-hand experience of working through these self-perceived pseudo-limits, our young people are ill-prepared to meet the many challenges that await them as adults. As educators, we have a moral responsibility to provide our students with every tool and skill that will prepare them to take on the role of citizen in the broadest sense of the word. From my perspective, athletic participation is a crucial component of that enterprise.”
