The varsity football team opened its season at home on Cougar Field. Although the team was depleted on opening day, only sixteen boys suited up, the team wasn't going to allow the lack of subs to deter them from their goal of going 1-0. In the first quarter, after a quick three plays and out, the Cougar defense began its day towards a shut out. After giving up a long run, Angelo Leon ’21 recovered a fumble to give the home team great field position. Co-captain Kenneth Rodriguez ’19 hooked up with Miles Pinnock ’19 on a screen play that gave us even better field position. Another pass into the flat combining these two resulted in a nice open field run that led to the first touchdown of the season for Kenneth and Miles. Kenneth dropped the ball off to Miles in the flat and he weaved his way thirty-five yards into the end zone.

After a great defensive stand forced another punt, Kenneth hooked up with Nick Harris ’19, who was playing in his first game. Nick ran a seam route and made a nice catch in the middle of the field. A thirty-yard reception gave us a first down. After turning the ball over on downs, the defense took the field and held Morrisville. Corner Bennett Lichstein ’20 intercepted a toss to the end zone to end their threat. On the ensuing possession, an errant throw wound up in the hands of a Bulldog lineman, and he rambled into the end zone to give the guests an 8-6 lead going into the half.

In the second half, Morrisville came out determined to run the ball. However, on a drop back pass, Angus Ruscher ’21 playing in his first football game, came up with a huge sack. On the ensuing punt, Bennett ran it back within the twenty yard line. However, a penalty brought it back to the Cougars' side of the field. Another drop off into the flat wound up in the hands of a Morrisville defense man who then ran it into the end zone for their second and only score. The Cougars now trailed 16-6. The Cougars weren't going to be out done. Kenneth threw a strike to Justus Agosto ’21 who climbed the ladder to pull in a pass and turned it into a first down. We then pounded the ball with Miles down to the two yard line where Kenneth ran it in for the score. The 2-point conversion was successful when Kenneth found Bennett in the back of the end zone. The defense, which had been stingy all day, got stingier. Nick Palladino ’19 rushed the backfield and dropped the running back for a big loss. He then smothered the quarterback for a huge loss on an errant center snap. A sack by Will Rampe ’20 put a stamp on the Bulldogs' drive. Graham Janovic ’20 gave the hosts great field position when he tipped the ensuing punt attempt. Then Kenneth orchestrated the drive to end the game. He ran for two first downs. Miles picked up eight yards on a toss. Angelo picked up six yards on a dive. Then Kenneth pounded the ball in for his second rushing touchdown and third overall. The defense, fittingly, was on the field to end the game. Another sack by Will put the guests in bad field position. Then a sack by Nick Harris pushed the Bulldogs back even further. The Cougar hopefuls were cheering loudly. A long bomb down field yielded positive yards for Morrisville and the drive continued. After two incomplete passes, a toss came up short and the Cougars took the victory kneel to end the game.

The team plays at home again on Saturday against Pennington School at 2:30 p.m.

Loss 0-21

On Friday night, the Cougars traveled to Bristol High School. After a lopsided loss to Pennington the previous weekend, the team put in plenty of extra work during practices. Unfortunately for the guests, we were unable to generate points offensively to counter the Warriors' attack. In the first quarter, the hosts held on the opening drive and the Cougar defense reciprocated with an equally impressive stop. At the end of the first quarter, the two teams were scoreless. In the latter part of the second quarter, the hosts finally got on the board and took a 7-0 lead. To begin the second half, the Cougars kicked off and continued to bend but not break. After a long pass put the hosts in position to score, the Cougars finally succumbed and were trailing 14-0. On the ensuing kickoff, the ball caromed off the receiving team and landed in the arms of the Warriors. They scored their third and final touchdown to take a 21-0 lead. They held George School scoreless. The Cougars travel to St. Andrew's School this Friday.
