George School vs Solebury School—Wednesday, December 12, 2018 @ 3:30 p.m.
Our wrestling Cougars hosted Solebury School on December 12th for our home opener. The match felt like an old-school battle with a longtime rival. The last time the two schools met the match ended up in a tie, but George School won the match by criteria (31-30). This time, we started the match at 106-lbs like the old days. After a double forfeit at 106-lbs., sophomore Frederic Perera started off with a first period pin via a cradle that just beat the buzzer (1:59), his third varsity pin of the season. We forfeited the next weight class (120 lbs.) and received a forfeit from Solebury at 126 pounds. Those two wrestlers then wrestled an exhibition match, which junior Zaeem Syed won by pin (1:00). Next up was sophomore Jacob Quinn at 132 pounds. Jacob fought hard against an extremely wiry and quick opponent, who was like wrestling a smothering octopus. Jacob got himself out numerous jams and managed to score 6 points on his opponent, all while avoiding getting pinned or giving up a technical fall (losing by 15 points). Final bout score: 18-6. At this point in the match, George School was winning by the slim margin of 12-10, but then our next five wrestlers went prancing around our opponents like hungry cats. First up was sophomore Sebi Vinhais with a pin just over a minute (1:05) at 138 lbs. After a double forfeit at 145-lbs., Sophomore Eric Guo pinned his opponent in 3:05. Next came the match of the afternoon between sophomore Aidan Sheehan and one of Solebury’s talented Zalewsky brothers at 160 pounds. Aidan came out aggressively, but his opponent was a good counter wrestler who knew how to score points. Aidan continued to wear him down physically, but Aidan, nevertheless, was still down by 3 points going into the third period. Aidan found a second gear, taking him down twice and scoring back points to finish the match victorious by a score of 10-7. Junior captain Conrad Vakili continued our winning ways with another first period pin (1:09), as did sophomore Angus Ruscher. For Angus, not only was it a meaning first career varsity pin, but it was the quickest one of the day (0:37), a nice reward after being out with a knee injury all last season. Our lone freshman, Alden Cronin, bumped up to 195-pound weight class to wrestle their captain, the other Salewski brother, and lost by pin in the first period. Solebury earned another forfeit at 285-lbs to round out the match. Final score: GS – 39 Solebury – 22, with a total of 7 head-to-head wins for us, six via pin. Yes, it definitely felt just like an old school match for the GS wrestling team!
