Class of 2021 Commencement Highlights

On Saturday, May 29, 2021, at 9:30 a.m. George School celebrated the members of the Class of 2021 during the school’s one hundred and twenty-seventh Commencement Ceremony. Head of School Sam Houser welcomed the seniors and their friends and families.

“You learned that you can survive uncertainty, that you can adapt to the unknown, and you can get through deprivation and loss. You have learned that you are strong. You have learned that you have a voice and that that voice can influence other people…”

Sam Houser

“You’ve got this. The past year and a half has made you more than ready… Congratulations to you Class of 2021. I trust you with the world and I look forward to it being better because of you…”

Edwin Onyango ’21

Edwin delivered the invocation, an original essay and painting titled, Hope Dies Last.

“It seems like our high school journey is coming to an end. But maybe the only thing coming to an end is the use of the term high school to describe ourselves. We don’t know how the journey forward might be and maybe it is going to be worse than we experienced before. Or maybe it is going to be better… but really there are only two options. You keep going or you quit. You have always known that every single second added to your life is a gift and a second chance to make yourself better. I hope it is the choice that you keep making.”

Shelby Williams ’21 and Sean Whalen ’21

Shelby and Sean performed Blackbird by John Lennon and Paul McCartney.

“Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these broken wings and learn to fly
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to arise
Blackbird fly, blackbird fly
Into the light of a dark black night”

Sarah Mayer ’21

Sarah shared The Miracle of Morning by Amanda Gorman.

“Let every dawn find us courageous, brought closer;
Heeding the light before the fight is over.
When this ends, we’ll smile sweetly, finally seeing
In testing times, we became the best of beings.”

Jackson Swartz ’21

Jackson performed My Favorite Things by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein.

“When I’m feeling sad
I simply remember my favorite things
And then I don’t feel so bad”

David Xi ’21

David delivered an original narrative The Courage to Exist.

“Today I am here to reflect on what truly made my time at George School so deeply profound and influential. You. The people I am honored to call my friends. As our journey comes to an end, I am hopeful that we can all find inspiration in the past four years.”

Diana Savchyn ’21

Diana performed The Climb, by Jessi Alexander, Miley Cyrus, and Jon Mabe.

“There’s always gonna be another mountain
I’m always gonna wanna make it move
Always gonna be an uphill battle
Sometimes you’re gonna have to lose
Ain’t about how fast I get there
Ain’t about what’s waiting on the other side
It’s the climb”

Class of 2021 Mosaic

During the recessional, the George School Chorale performed Among Friends by James Prosser ’85.

When the ceremony came to an end, the senior class was treated to a photo mosaic of Main made from many small, colorful photos of themselves.
