The Aquatics Director is responsible for ensuring that high quality swim education programs are executed throughout the summer. The Aquatics Director manages the aquatics staff and ensures that all swimming and camp water activities are safe. The Aquatics Director is responsible for the safety and swim education of approximately 350 campers ages 4-14.

Pool Management:

• Manage aquatics staff:
  • Ensure that all aquatics staff are current with required certifications.
  • Lead pre-camp orientation and trainings.
  • Develop and implement training and education in-services throughout the summer as needed.
  • In conjunction with the leadership team, write staff evaluations for Aquatics staff.
  • Directly supervise lifeguard staff and ensure they are following camp policies and procedures. Provide mentorship and support as needed.
  • Provide work schedule for all aquatic employees.
• Ensure high quality Red Cross swim education programs are executed throughout the summer.
• Must be able to lead, facilitate, and participate in rescues and emergency procedures.
• Serve as primary liaison between aquatic program and Camp Leadership.
  • Communicate regularly about program improvement ideas, safety concerns and ongoing logistic questions.
  • Facilitate effective communication with aquatics staff regarding pool regulations, staff expectations, and program feedback.
• Ensure swimming and all camp water activities are safe.
  • Conduct daily evaluations of safety needs and potential improvements for safety of swimming and kayaking programs
  • Evaluate facilities in vicinity of swim program for safety and cleanliness, including, but not limited to, locker rooms and the pool deck.
  • Implement safety training program for staff, including directing emergency drills throughout the summer to improve staff emergency response
  • Schedule staff for additional camp programs on weekends and evenings.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Current certification in the following:
  • Lifeguard Training and First Aid
  • CPR for the Professional Rescuer
  • Water Safety Instructor Certification (preferred but not required)
• Must be at least 21 years old.
• Must have a High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Must possess knowledge and application of lifeguarding surveillance and rescue techniques; experience with waterfront lifeguarding a plus but not required.
• Must be able to lead, facilitate, and participate in rescues and emergency procedures.
• Must possess an understanding of pool operations (this includes but is not limited to managing lifeguards and other pool staff, and upholding facility rules, policies, and procedures).
• Must possess good decision-making skills.
• Must possess leadership skills and the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
• Must appreciate working with children at varied developmental levels.
• Must be a positive role model – mature, caring, honest, respectful, responsible, fair and dedicated.

Division Leaders are responsible for the day-to-day operation of multiple camp groups and are involved in the direct supervision of senior counselors within their division.  They are expected to serve as role models for their division and for the camp as a whole.  Division Leaders actively participate in all camp orientation and training sessions.

The Camp Administrative Assistant reports to the Camp Director and Assistant Camp Director and oversees the day-to-day operations of the camp office. They assist with all aspects of communication for camp, including but not limited to, answering all camp phone calls and responding to email inquiries from both current and prospective camp families. The Camp Administrative Assistant assists with the creation of the weekly camp newsletter, ordering camp supplies, assisting the Camp Director with staff trainings, and other duties as needed.

Head Counselors work closely with the camp directors to coordinate and organize the camp program, including daily activities and special events.  They also assist camp directors with the planning and implementation of certain aspects of staff training.  Head Counselors are responsible for the supervision of their campers as well as support staff.  They transition with their group through the daily activities. Head Counselors should strive to build and nurture a sense of community and understanding among all staff members. They serve as a supervisor, but also as a support to camp staff. Head Counselors actively participate in all camp orientation and training sessions.

General Counselors work closely with group leaders in the supervision, planning, and implementation of camp activities. General Counselors are the primary caregivers for the campers. He/she ensures campers are properly supervised at all times and is aware of, and implements, safety guidelines.  General Counselors actively participate in all camp orientation and training sessions.

Activity Leaders plan, organize and implement daily camp activities within their designated area. Activity Leaders provide support during camp-wide activities as well as supervise junior staff. Activity Leaders should serve as a positive role model during instruction and engage all campers and counselors in the activity. Activity Leaders actively participate in all camp orientation and training sessions.

The Art Instructor is responsible for the development of an age-appropriate arts and crafts program. He/she must be able to design and deliver arts and crafts activities that make use of different art mediums as well as the camp’s natural environment. The Art Instructor actively participates in all camp orientation and training sessions.

The Drama Instructor will further the camp’s mission through the development and the delivery of drama, dance, and singing activities that are both safe and fun. Campers should enjoy the experience but also learn about themselves and discover they can present themselves differently to others through the acts of singing, dancing, and acting. The Drama Instructor actively participates in all camp orientation and training sessions and prepares camp groups for their variety show presentations.

The role of the Nature Instructor is to further the camp's mission through the development and delivery of nature or environmental activities that are safe, fun, and age appropriate. Activities should reflect the camp’s commitment to environmental stewardship. The Nature Instructor actively participates in all camp orientation and training sessions.

The primary responsibility of the camp nurse is to provide professional nursing care to all campers. The nurse is responsible for maintaining up-to-date medical records, recording condition and treatment, including administration of medications, for all campers who present themselves to the nurse’s office during camp. He/she will immediately inform the Camp Director and/or Assistant Camp Director in the event of a medical emergency or potentially serious health related situation. The camp nurse must be able to work independently and have excellent communication skills when interacting with campers and parents.

George School Day Camp employs lifeguards to oversee the safety of all campers and camp staff in the aquatics facility.  Lifeguards must be able to perform first aid and emergency care when required.  Lifeguards need to be able to work as a team, will help the WSI Instructor facilitate swim lessons, and are responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and organization of the pool area. Lifeguards actively participate in all camp orientation and training sessions.

Water Safety Instructors will teach campers swimming skills and water safety according to the curriculum and standards of the George School Day Camp Aquatics Program. The WSI Instructors actively participate in all camp orientation and training sessions.
