Community Says Goodbye to Marion the Librarian

The George School community is invited to celebrate and say goodbye to Library Director Marion Wells p ’13, during Alumni Weekend 2021.

George School has had the honor of having a knowledgeable and skilled research librarian centered in the academic life of the school since 2014. With her Master of Library Science degree from Rutgers University, and her undergraduate degree from San Francisco State University, Marion joined the George School faculty as a librarian with valuable experience, having worked as a librarian at Princeton University’s Firestone Library, in addition to numerous other university and public libraries. During her time at George School, Marion has worked tirelessly to ensure the Mollie Dodd Anderson Library (MDA) is a welcoming, peaceful, and academically focused space for students and the community.

Throughout her years of service, Marion helped maintain a collection of resources that serve the changing needs of George School’s academic program, while also overseeing and participating in all aspects of the school archives. She collaborated with her library colleagues, Information Technology Services, and Marketing and Strategic Communications to keep the library website current and accurate, and through the Library Gateway, made resources more widely available and accessible to the community. Marion developed cutting edge learning modules for academic research across a range of subjects, teaching George School students valuable, lifelong skills.

In addition to these accomplishments, Marion has supported the school in a multitude of ways including serving as Clerk of Diversity Oversight Committee, International Student Co-Sponsor, Chair of PAIS Accreditation Interim Report Committee, MLK Day Committee, Foundational Skills Committee member, and as a loyal, attentive, and beloved advisor. She has also been a Class Sponsor, Faculty Recording Clerk, instructor for the Academic Summer Program, and has served on Faculty Concerns, and the Steering Committee for the Assessment of Inclusivity and Multiculturalism, in addition to the Administrative Technology Group, Advisory Committee on Technology, Foundational Skills Committee, Wellness Committee, and the TEDx Planning Committee.

Marion’s commitment to staying current not only in library science but in independent school educational trends in general has been extraordinary. She has been active in numerous peer networks and engaged in countless workshops, online courses, and webinars through the American Library Association (ALA), various universities, the American Association of School librarians (AASL), The Association of Boarding Schools (TABS), and the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS).

Although Marion is retiring from her role as Library Director, she will continue to help coordinate the supervision of Extended Essays for George School IB diploma candidates.

Marion is the mother of George School alumna, Emma Wells ’13.

The community is invited to celebrate Marion’s career and send her well wishes during the Coffee with Faculty session of Alumni Weekend on Saturday, May 1, 2021 at 11:00 a.m.
