Cougars Beat Abington Friends 2-1

The George School varsity baseball team defeated Abington Friends School 2-1 notching their first Friends Schools League win of the season on Thursday, April 25, 2019. Captain Kenneth Rodriguez ’19 was spectacular on the mound, recording seven strike outs and allowing no hits or walks.

“Kenneth Rodriguez went six and two-thirds innings with seven strikeouts and had an RBI as George School edged Abington Friends 2-1,” reported Corey Sharp from The Inquirer. “Joe Kumar ’20 hit a solo home run as part of a two-run third inning.”

Justus Agosto ’21 came through with a single after Joe’s home run and promptly settled into second after his first stolen base of the game. Kenneth then singled to score Justus and give the Cougars a two-to-one lead. Second baseman Owen Kirk ’21 secured two pop fly balls and two ground balls that resulted in outs.

The play that secured the win came in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Cougars were still up 2-1 with two outs and Abington had bases loaded. The Roos batter hit a fly ball sky high to right field where Aidan Sheehan ’21 had just entered the game. Aidan came in on the ball, then slowly checked his direction, and readjusted as the ball began to descend. In the most dramatic way, he caught the ball while sliding on the wet grass for the third and final out.

The Cougars play their last home game against Germantown Friends School during Alumni Weekend on Saturday, May 4, 2019 at 2:00 p.m.
