The George School varsity wrestling team defeated Solebury School 39-22 at their first home game of the season on Wednesday, December 12, 2018. The team scored seven head-to-head matches, six via a pin.
“It was an old-school wrestling match,” said Pacho Gutierrez ’77, co-head coach. “After a double forfeit at 106-pounds, Frederic Perera ’21 started off with a first period pin via a cradle that just beat the buzzer (1:59). It was his third pin of the season.”
Sebi Vinhais ’21 won his match with a pin in just over a minute (1:05) at 138 lbs. Eric Guo ’21 pinned his opponent in 3:05. Conrad Vakili ’20 continued the Cougar’s winning streak with another first period pin (1:09), as did Angus Ruscher ’21. For Angus, not only was it his first varsity pin, but it was the quickest one of the day (0:37).
“The match of the game was between Aidan Sheehan ’21 and one of Solebury’s talented Zalewski brothers at 160 pounds,” said Pacho. “Aidan came out aggressively, but his opponent Nathaniel was a good counter wrestler who knew how to score points. Aidan continued to wear him down physically, but nevertheless, was still down by three points going into the third period. Luckily, Aidan found a second gear and took his opponent down twice, scoring back points to finish the match victorious by a score of 10-7.”
Alden Cronin ’22 bumped up to the 195-pound weight class to wrestle Garrit, the Solebury team captain and the other Zalewski brother, and lost by pin in the first period.
The Cougars’ upcoming match against rivals Westtown School is on Tuesday January 8, 2018 for a moose point.
